Thoughts from the Oval Office

Conventions

by Matt Davidson

Well, it is time for another installment. Firstly, thanks go out to all those Great Lakes members who ran games and manned the HMGS desk at Origins. I was there on Saturday and the place was well attended. I ran my ACW naval game in the morning, went to the dealer area(where I got a copy of the long-awaited Command Decision 3) , and then manned the desk from 8pm-10pm. I enjoyed this Origins and I especially enjoyed talking with our members, as well as those from the other HMGS chapters.

Also we picked up at least 13 new members for our efforts. Fantastic! Thanks also go out to Pete Panzeri for working with Andon and organizing the HMGS efforts there. Pete told me we almost doubled the number of historical miniature events at this Origins over last year. Great! Hopefully next year the convention will not be over the 4th of July weekend. Between family commitments and the big fireworks display on the 3rd, it is remarkable we did as well as we did.

Our Flagship convention, Advance the Colors '98 is proceeding nicely. As of this writing, I am informed we have 21 events already scheduled. For those of you with internet capability, the current list of events are at: http://www.erinet.com/bp/advcolor.html . Brian O'Leary, event coordinator, is updating the list periodically, courtesy of Bob French, who graciously allows us to use space on his web site.

T-shirts have been decided upon and I think they will look sharp. Advance the Colors is not too far off now, so if you haven't done so already, get your events sent in so we can include them in the Preliminary Events Listing (PEL).

Since I am coordinating the raffle at the convention, once again, please contact me if you wish to donate any military history or historical miniature gaming item. The proceeds from the raffle go towards covering the costs of The Herald. I'm sure you all would like to support such a fine publication!

That's about it for now.
