Suggestion for HMGS Great Lakes

Bring Your Own Unit Event Proposal

by Chris von Fahnestock

I hosted a 25mm ACW game at the Tin Soldier on 18 Jan. Matt Davison and I (and others) discussed a few ideas, of which one stuck out To help bring people into the hobby as well as promote this year's Advance the Colors, how about an "HMGS Bring Your Own Unit" event?

I envision a large, 20-30 player 25mm ACW game. Each player brings either an Infantry Regiment or an Artillery Battery. We can organize the actual Order of Battle as the year progresses, and discuss this and the scenario throughout the year here in the HMGS Newsletter. Matt thought we could use the Fast and Furious rules as the convention rules.

If this sounds interesting, then I urge people to get their regiments together. This game is a 1:25 scale 25mm event. An Infantry Regiment can have between 18 and 36 figures, with 24 being the average regimental strength. Each figure has a' " frontage and 1" depth. I mount only one set of 6 figures on individual stands so it can become the skirmish company. The other figures I mount on stands that are 2 1/4" wide and 2" deep, six figures to a stand. For Artillery I leave the gun pieces loose, mounting four gunners in a base 2 1/4" wide and 3" deep. Further, since a player only would (in theory, at least) command one battery, I mount limbers on stands based on the actual width of the overall battery. This means, that for a 4 gun battery of 2 section (i.e. 2 stands) I have a four horse limber on a base that is 5" long and however wide as necessary.... A 6 gun battery of 3 sections would have a six horse limber on a base that is 6 1/4" long. Keep in mind, each regiment or battery must have a loose, individual officer, to represent the Regimental Commander.

Matt and I really thought that this would be a great idea. Let's discuss it....
