Publications, Figures, and Other Products of Interest1. Soldiers of the Queen, issue 116. “French Advance in the Western Sudan, 1880-94” by Edwin Herbert. What a great article, tons of scenario ideas from real historic actions-who’da thunk it. Well written, condensed history, makes me want more. We also have part II Timbuktu and the Tuareg now we really need to pull out or maybe even paint our FFL, Tirailleurs, Shapis and Tuareg’s. Sorry about all the gushing praise Ted, but, this is a great article, well done. There are a couple of other articles that are pretty neat with pretty pictures, but, nothing as good as Herbert’s. The Soldier’s Small Book #61 is a center foldout extra. 2. Castaway Arts, See the review of the New Fuzzy Wuzzy’s. 3. Lone Wargamer, issue 146, “Solo Tactical Plans” by Nic Birt, has some very good idea for trained troops. 4. Wargames Illustrated, #201, The article by Phil Robinson “Hunting the Yeti in the Back of Beyond” is the only colonial contribution this issue. The scenario also contains a rules variant for hunting Yeti for Rugged Adventurers by Pulp Figures. If you are using Copplestone’s Yeti’s and you need some rules, here they are. There are no ads for colonials this issue. However, one ad was rather intriguing the first 25 issues of WI on CD for 10 pounds. It also contains issues 1 and 2 of Wargames World. If you have not seen the first, maybe the only five issues of Wargames World they contain a five-part article by Peter Gilder on wargaming the battles in the Sudan. One of the best articles I have read on the subject. 5. magweb.com The Heliograph ranked 12 among 110+ magazines, someone must like us besides me. 6. This issue contains info for the game Battle of Crete (in 54mm) as well as news and reviews. If you are interested in 54s this is the game mag for you. www.skirmishwargames.co.uk 8. MWAN, #129 $35.00 from Legio X, inc. PO Box 241, Williams Bay, WI 53191 www.mwan-magazine.com No colonial articles this issue (send them here instead), but there is a nice Boxer Rebellion photo on the front cover using Old Glory German Seebattalion and Boxers. 9. And from the Dark Empire Games Workshop is “How to Make Wargames Terrain”, $25. Chapters include Planning Landscapes, The Board, Hills, Woods, Water, Features, Roads, Obstacles, Buildings, Basing and painting, Terrain Boards, Inspiration, Materials and Tools. I think that about covers it. WOW! I read this cover to cover the first day I got it (well after I took it out of Ben’s hands and I paid him back for buying it). It is great, loads of photos and the Inspiration photos and drawings make your mouth water. Yeah, Yeah Dark Empire but, hey this book is great, if you can’t find terrain ideas here you haven’t opened the book yet. Everyone from terrain novice to expert will find something of use here. 10. Stackpole Books, 5067 Ritter Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-6921 The “1862 US Cavalry Tactics” by Philip St. George Cooke. Includes Instructions, Formations, Maneuvers, music notes for 38 bugle calls, Regimental command for colonels, for Platoons, and also Squadron commands. Great stuff for mounted troops, not much for dismounted fighting. Contains 200 maneuvers 46 illustrations, and a section on cavalry ops on the frontier. If you are using US cavalry you need this book. 416 pages, $19.95 Back to The Heliograph # 143 Table of Contents Back to The Heliograph List of Issues Back to Master Magazine List © Copyright 2004 by Richard Brooks.
