2. Castaway Arts

See the review.

3. Lone Warrior

issue 143. As always great and inspiring articles for solo gaming. One colonial article (actually a review) this issue “Building a Fleet of River Gunboats in 1/300 scale” (ships are from Glencoe models PO Box 846 Northboro MA 01532). Apparently their line includes stern-wheelers and junks.

4. Parroom Station

See the review.

5. Figures Artillery and Armor

of Nashville, TN., in the Brookhurst list of their figs (28mm) have Spanish Civil War figs, ok no big deal you say, well, it includes early period Spanish Foreign Legion as well as some Moroccan troops in turbans. I emailed FAA to confirm this several times but have received no answer yet.

6. Soldiers of the Queen

The Victorian Military Society, PO Box 5837, Newbury, RG14 7FJ, UK

Issue 114 has several interesting articles two of which are of interest to gamers. “The Benin Expedition” by Louis Ackroyd in which 1200 sailors and Marines and 500 Niger Coast Constabulary with 3000 porters capture Benin in three columns in less than 18 days. This is in response to the ambush of the Philips Mission to the King to end the cult of human sacrifice. “The Battle of Colenso and the Demise of Sir Redvers Buller” by S A Walt discusses the consequences of inaccurate maps of the 19th century and General Buller. Useful and interesting article, nice??? Map.

7. There were several articles concerning the Boer and Zulu Wars in the various military history mags, and one concerning WWI in East Africa. But I did not buy them this time, money’s tight, so sorry no details.

8. Scholar’s Bookshelf

110 Melrich Rd. Cranbury, NJ 08512 has two sets list of interest in their military history catalog 53DHR Fenwick Travers by R Saunders set of 3 volumes for $7.95 you can’t beat that price. 6ND5R Flashman by Fraser set of 10 volumes $110.00 Another nice?? deal.

9. From ‘And That’s the Way It Was’

I received three sets of rules--Gunboat Diplomacy, The Kris and the Flame, and The Sword in the Punjab. I got these just before going to the printer so I will review them next issue, which I hope to mail before 15 December. I immediately read thru TKATF and while I was reading it Ben suggested we give it a game run through for the review, we will do the same for all three. I also read through Gunboat Diplomacy; that has naval battle rules, since we have played naval games using the Dark Empire’s (Games Workshop) naval rules and really like them, I will match them in the review as best I can.

With the release of Gunboat Diplomacy, TSATF, TSNS, 800 FE, and all the various Sword and Flame variants available from the Brom’s at ‘And That’s the Way It Was’ the whole world of 19th century empire building is available for which ever European country you want to turn into a colonial power. Well, not only that but the rules system are all integrated so if you know the basic TSATF the rest pretty much follow suit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED RULES
