BU11 White Russian Infantry in Chinese Army The “Back of Beyond” series by Mark Copplestone was expanded at the end of 2002 by the first cavalry figures in this line, as well as by another unit for China in the 1920’s. The figure design and sculpting is up to the usual high standard for Mark Copplestone, with all figures being well-detailed and in proper proportion to their height. As 28mm figures, the White Russian infantrymen measure 28mm from the top of the base to eye level, or about 30mm total height to top of the head. (The Russians seem to me to stand just a bit taller and bulkier than the Chinese troops in this series.) The White Russians represent the troops that joined the armies of China’s regional Warlords after the close of the Russian Revolution. They are in the 1920’s era uniform of the Chinese republic, and match the other Chinese units in the Copplestone line. Their equipment is a Y-pattern belt with pouches, and one or two have blanket rolls over the shoulder. The BU11 set has ten figures, randomly assorted, and I received 5 in round caps with brim and 5 wearing the fur cap with ear flaps. All are in good advancing positions. Caps are in various positions and some figures wear mustaches in Russian style. These are perfect recreations of the émigré Russian soldier illustrated in the Osprey Men-At-Arms publication 306 for “Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-1949” (Plate C-2).
