Old Glory has produced a new series of useful generic figures for adventures in Africa. Beginning with 30-figure packs offering several versions of warlike tribesmen, the series has expanded to include set LAT-10 described as Explorers, Missionaries, Renegades, Constables. This is really “a mixed bag of characters”. The bag has 18 different figures and 2 duplicates for a total of 20 items. Priced at $ 30.00 this is $ 1.50 a figure. The figures are 30mm tall from base to top of head, or 28mm in today’s terms. The design and sculpture is robust, in the style of the West Wind products offered by Old Glory. Most figures are in the usual standing or advancing poses, except for the hunter in the Tyrolian hat with a curved pipe in hand, who stands atop the male lion he has just dispatched (a two-piece set with a pin to hold the hunter in place). ). Of course there is a long-haired fellow in loincloth and a jungle girl in abbreviated costume. European males include one with a sextant, two with cameras in use, a top-hatted preacher, and four hunters or renegades with guns (three with rifles and one with a pistol in hand and coiled whip). A male in sun helmet and shorts walks with a cane, carries a pipe and may be the officer for the “constables” who are four askari in shorts and fez carrying magazine rifles at the ready (2 each of 2 poses).A native guide has a staff and carries a knapsack and binoculars. Female characters include two old women (yep, hair in a bun) one with a parasol and the other hefting a double barreled shotgun. The adventuress is in blouse, vest, trousers and boots and holds her pistol up by her head. The figures are well-detailed with a variety of headgear, equipment and weapons. In size and heft they will fit in perfectly with the Foundry “Darkest Africa” line, as well as with the new Pulp Figures by Bob Murch. These figures are a tad smaller than Mark Copplestone’s new “Back of Beyond” line, but I think they will work with that series also. All in all, a good package of generic characters for African adventures. Recommended.
