Ultimate Miniatures

28mm Victorian Colonial
Highlanders, British, Askari

review by Richard Brooks

Ultimate Miniatures (PO Box 3959, Visalia, CA 93278-3959)28mm figures are difficult to properly place with other figures. The infantry are 27mm from foot to eye but the size of the head is too small for them to fit in a mixed figure unit. I have several Units, Highlander and British Regulars that are painted slightly brighter than my other figures and they fit in ok, but only as a separate unit. If the heads were better proportioned to the rest of the body they would mix very well, but they don’t, I think this is there only problem, as long as you remember that should be painted for gaming not display.

There are sufficient figures to make both a Highland Light Infantry and Regular British infantry units with five to six different figure poses. Actually, you could make a very nice two-regiment brigade with artillery. Or if you didn’t mind a single pose Indian regiment with Indian mountain gunners, then you’d have a three-regiment brigade.

The cavalry figures are 25mm from foot to eyes and will work very well with standard 25mm figures, such as Minifigs, Falcon UK and Ral Partha. Unfortunately, the horse that came with these figures was for the larger 30s and looked like it was 19-20 hands high with these figures, so I would suggest using 25mm horses. There were two camels with the cavalry one walking and one kneeling, both actually quite nice.
