Castaway Arts

28mm Early Campaign Mahdists

review by Richard Brooks

These figures from Castaway Arts (PO Box 7599, Cairns 4870, Australia, Phone/fax 0740412079, www.castawayarts.com.au) are early campaign Mahdists. They measure 28mm from the foot to the eyes and fit well with all other 28mm figures except Reviresco. They are slightly smaller than the nearly 30mm Redoubt, Connoisseur and Ultimate 30mm. The come with spears or swords and have little tabs on the hands to hold shields. I got two shields with these figs, one of which was a Zulu type? Generally, these are flash free except in a few instances as indicated below. In some cases the sword or spear arm is too close to the body and with careful cutting and manipulation can be better positioned. Otherwise I really like these figures each has a character quality about them that makes them even more desirable. Even if you have all the Madhists you think you need, guess again these figures will really make your units come to life.

M1 In robe, striking overhead, very nicely detailed, shield to side, running, spear or sword overhead, flash between arm and head, easily removed, hand overhead a little too small and closed with flash. Arm can be moved carefully.

M2 In robe, pointing, spear or sword hand on shoulder, very nicely detailed, good animation.

M3 In robe, striking two-handed overhead with sword, very nice.

M4 In robe, running, yelling, shield to side, throwing spear, flash between arm and shoulder easily removed. Arm can be moved carefully.

M5 In robe, cap, advancing, shield to side, best for sword overhead strike, looks like old man, very nice detail.

M6 Sleeveless jibba, attacking, yelling, throwing spear, shield to front, very nice pose.

M7 Sleeveless jibba, skull-cap, looks like igor without the hump, great face, good for spear or sword, shield to side, slightly strange pose.

M8 In robe, taggia cap, shield to side, best with sword, very nice detail.

M9 Skull-cap, attacking with spear, great face, nice detail, jabbing with spear no shield.

M10 Short Sleeved jibba, cap, Nice head, ok jibba, shield to front, good for sword or move arm for throwing spear.

M11 Taggia cap, spear or standard, very nice standard bearer, nice detail, shield to front, some flash between arm and shoulder.
