Bill Grant sent along the next batch of 30 and 25mm figures for review, still two more to come. I love these old Jack Scruby figures.
These figures while they have detail it is unlike today’s detail that is really raised and easy to paint. Oh no, the barest of outlines for buttons and belts suffice here and it is a matter of painting ability, not mine of course, to do these up right. However, these paint fast when you want to call up an army in a hurry and they are excellent for gaming.
These figures are not chunky like Essex or Foundry nor for that matter Old Glory, these are thin and more in line with what photographs indicate that soldiers looked like.
The minimum order on these 30 mm figures is 6 each for infantry and 3 each for cavalry. AT a $1.10 each and 30 to the pound these guys are a great buyu for the game table.
African and Indian Wars 30mm Figures
I like these figures, they are for the game table not for close inspection and super painted detail and the price is right. These figures are great to fill out field armies with. The Infantry and Highlanders have useful poses for field operations. The most useful figures are the Infantry and Sailor artilleryman since you can pose their arms in various positions and add ’things’ to his hands (ramrod, ball, rifle, etc.).
1501 British Regular, on guard, similar to 1553 but has a pack and different sun helmet.
1502 British Regular, standing firing, similar to 1551, but with pack and different sun helmet.
1506 British Regular, kneeling firing, same as 1552.
1503 Highlander, on guard, same as last time 1503.
1508 Highlander, standing firing, same as Highlander firing last issue.
1507 Infantry Officer, same as 1555.
1541 British Artilleryman, same as 1556, with pose able arms with care.
1543 British Artillery Officer, with binoculars, nice figure, but smaller than the other 30s, he’s the size of a 28 but the sun helmet is too small.
1542 Sailor, gunner, pose able arms with care.
1504 Australian, bush hat, on guard, pack, haversack, canteen, cartridge boxes.
1505 Australian, bush hat, firing, pack, haversack, canteen, cartridge boxes.
1509c British Lancer, lance erect, same as 1560c
1510c Mounted Infantry, sun helmet, rifle, similar sun helmet to 1512c.
1511c British Dragoon, sword up, sun helmet, hand on thigh, strange pose, I would cut the hand and move it, then it could be used as mounted officer.
1512c Australian Light Horse, carbine on thigh, nice pose for picket duty, plume on hat.
1513c Colonial scout, bush hat, firing, is this really a mounted German Schutztruppen?
1524 Askari, on guard, haversack and canteen, neck cloth.
1525 Askari, firing, haversack and canteen, neck cloth.
1526 Askari Officer, pistol in hand, pose able with care, neck cloth.
1527 Gurkha, full dress, kneeling on guard, ok as an individual but I wouldn’t want a unit of these guys.
1528 Indian, firing, haversack, blanket, canteen, cartridge boxes.
1530 Indian, advancing, haversack, blanket, canteen, cartridge boxes, turban with pointed fez?
1529 Indian, on guard, haversack, blanket, canteen, cartridge boxes, plain turban.
1531c Indian, lancer, the heart of my Bengal Lancer Brigade. I LOVE THIS GUY!
1581 Pathan, on guard, sheep skin cape, weird pose.
1580 Pathan Firing, this figure would make a very nice Afghan regular.
There are some very nice figures here, the poses are a little static and not as animated as today’s figures but these are over 40 years old and were made to play games with. These are the core of my British, Indian and German colonial armies, at least until I catch up on my painting.
25mm
As last time these 25mm are the same scale as 1/72, HO scale ESCI, AIRFIX and all the new plastic 20mm I have seen, they also fit with Newline Design (although Newline is a bit chunky) and Qualiticast. These added to those figures will give you some very nice depth to your armies they are nicely made, I like these guys, VERY NICE. (Irregular and C&Q Miniatures make 20mm figures but I have not seen them to see how these all fit together or not.)
3322 Highland Officer, firing pistol.
3324 Sailor, on guard, sennet hat.
3325 Sailor, maxim gunner, sennet hat.
3323 Naval Officer, hand on hip.
3332c Askari Regular cavalry, sword raised.
3301 Gurkha, standing firing, cartridge box, kukri, need to cut off a bit on his cap.
3303 Gurkha, on guard, cartridge box, kukri, need to cut off a bit on his cap.
3305 Indian, kneeling firing, a little flash on this one.
3309 Indian, Artilleryman, slung rifle, pose able arms with care.
3308 Indian, maxim gunner, he’s made to sit on the trail of the gun.
3312 Pathan, kneeling firing, with cartridge belt
3313 Pathan, attacking, with sword raised.
3314c Pathan firing, fortunately the way he’s holding his rifle he won’t hit a thing.
3315c Pathan, with sword raised, hand on thigh. I don’t like this pose, so I suppose I would detach the hand from the thigh and carefully move it.
