(Lives of a) Bengal Lancer

Book Review

by Richard Brooks

by F. Yeats-Brown, 1930.

Somehow I happen to have two copies of this and finally got around to reading it. This is the story of a 20th century British officer sent to the 17th Bengal Lancers as a young Lt. Here he is introduced to Indian Army (cavalry) life, the Hindu religion and warfare. The book has several good descriptions of pig sticking, which will go very well with Eureka Miniatures Pig Sticking Rules.

He discusses a pre-WWI field exercise as well as a post-WWI field exercise, both very good especially the later. Yeats-Brown goes into considerable detail on two subject first his introduction and pursuit of Hinduism, Yoga and Gurus (somewhat boring) and secondly his service in WWI as a flying artillery observer leading up to and after the Battle of Kut and his capture by the Turks. His escape makes pretty good reading also. The movie of the same name has some parts and pieces of this book present but is much better, except for the Battle of Kut.
