The Betrothed of Death

Book Review

review by John O'Connell

The Betrothed of Death: The Spanish Foreign Legion During the Rif Rebellion, 1920-1927 by Jose E Alvarez. Greenwood Press, 2001. $65.00 (may be half price from the History Book Club). Appendices, bibliography, 282 pages, maps, photographs and tables of Organization.

Contents: Creation of the Legion; First Operations, 1921; Legion Operations 1922-24; Xauen, 1924; The Alhucemas Bay Landings and the Defeat of Abd-el-krim; The Finale: Adjar, Targuist, and Peace 1926-27.

Appendices contents: Organization of the Legion; Table of Battle casualties; two biographies and a list of all forces at Alhucemas Bay landings (includes a list of supplies carried by the first wave). There are seven B&W photographs that are great for uniforms. Further, there are two tables one for the Tercio and one for the Bandera for organization and equipment. I have not yet finished reading this but it is full of great details for gaming. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in military action in North Africa and the FFL even if this is about the Spanish Foreign Legion.
