Issue 110: Full of great letters, new wargaming stuff and articles. Nothing colonial this issue (quite amazing) except a "Review of Essex 15mm Sudan Line" by Hal Thinglum. This is well worth reading as Hal not only reviews but puts forth ideas on converting some figures and using them on the table. MWAN IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

9. Victorian Military Society, Dan Allen, 20 Priory Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7QN Great Britain. If you don't belong to the Victorian Military Society you should, and tell them the Heliograph sent you.

This years' theme for the annual Victorian Military Fair 2001 (29 April in the Carisbrooke Hall of the Victory Services Club, Seymour Street, London) is the Victorian Navy. (Does anyone have a spare airline ticket for me to cover the Fair. Soldiers Small Book 51 contains a note about the Victorian Military Society's Die Hard Company spending time working on the new movie of The Four Feathers. Soldiers of the Queen Issue VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

10. The Melik Society, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW, Great Britain. The purpose of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of British and Sudanese history, particularly the development of river gunboats and the achievements of those involved in the military campaigns between 1883 and 1899. One of the immediate objectives is to facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats Melik and Bordein so that they can be exhibited, maintained and demonstrated to the general public. Every dollar or pound helps. Highly recommended charity!!!!

11. Wargames Illustrated, 18 Lovers Lane, Newark, Notts. NG24 1HZ Great Britain.

Issue 162 Carl De Roo has written a great article "The Force Publique in Action or 'Infamous Belgians in Africa'" that you could use with your Belgian forces from Foundry. The article basically is the Force Publique visits the Sudan. The article has some great information to use with your Belgians like campaign information, rank insignia, weapons, uniforms, and OBs. The Icon Ad now shows their Brits. Quite nice. www.harlequin-miniatures.com

Issue 163 D.A. Smith's "The North West Rebellion of 1885 Canada's Little War" contains a nice, filled with useful info, but basic article describing the entire rebellion. There is certainly enough information to work up several scenarios. The article also contains six drawings of uniforms. Apparently RAFM is the only company that makes figures distinctly for the war (11 packs), Smith says that Frontier also makes figures that could be used. The ad for the Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Co. shows six figures from their Spanish-American War range. Those pictured includes T. Roosevelt in khaki and five Rough Riders in blue. From the photo these appear to be very nice figures in 28mm. The Foundry ad shows more of their new Old West figures. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

12. Osprey Military Journal, Osprey Direct, P.O. Box 140, Wellingborough, Northants, NN8 4ZA Great Britain. www.ospreypublishing.com Osprey Military Journal Volume 3 , Issue 2 contains a colonial article "Bullets versus Horses?: Douglas Haig, the Boer War, and the development of rifle-armed cavalry 1880-1914" by Stephen Badsey. This article will make you think twice about using and how to use your English cavalry units in Africa. Apparently, there is a vast difference between Indian and English cavalry unit training. In the Indian units the horses and men are well trained to take care of their mounts. According to this article, with evidence based on the Zulu and Boer Wars, this training was absent in English units. Very informative article, good photos, and great illustrations. Osprey has a new Campaign Series (85) entitled Peking 1900 ready for distribution sometime soon; written by Peter Harrington (runs the photo section of the Anne S K Brown University Library at Rhode Island U. he also edited two Greenhill Press books recently on the Boxer Rebellion) and illustrated by Michael Perry.

14. Caliver Books, 816-818 London Road, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, SS9 3NH, Great Britain. Check out their web site www.caliverbooks.demon.co.uk I went to their web site and was quite impressed especially with "best delivered price of any bookseller on the web" you can't beat that. Battlefields and Age of Empires are available in the US from On Military Matters, (609) 466 2329.

Battlefields Issue 10 Contains an article by Tim Rose, of the Victorian Military Society's The Diehard Company, "A Hot Day in the Hills". The article contains his account of being in South Africa in uniforms for the Zulu and Boer Wars. Tim writes about the problems with the uniforms and equipment. As usual with Battlefields articles there are two excellent maps-Isandlhwana and Spion Kop. WOW!!! Great read. Thanks Tim for the ideas and problems with uniforms, and thanks Caliver for publishing Battlefields! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

There is also a review of a computer game entitled Cossacks from Game World www.cossacks.com If I had to have only one computer game, I only have my son's copy of Civilization to play although I haven't for years, I would want this game WOW. The graphics are great. It has 8,000 individual units in 3d landscape with 16 rival nations, 85 missions in the 17th and 18th centuries. With up to 7 players. It is not colonial, maybe one day. But this game looks outstanding from the flyer included with Battlefields.

15. BY JINGO http://members.spree.com/sip/byjingo It has been over a year since I was last here and I ran across several articles I thought very good. There is a series by Dennis Bishop on German Colonial troops in Southwest Africa, great info if you are interested in the area and great gaming info, particularly "The Tribes of German South West Africa" with warrior and tribal numbers. There is a series by Chris Ferree on solo campaigning in Ubonga that is excellent. I particularly liked stealing some of his ideas from "'God it's Hot...' Weather, its effects and the effects of other depredations on the occupants of Ubonga". However, the whole series is worth reading and stealing from. From Martin Porter is "They Don't Like It Up 'Em" which is a not really a set of rules rather default settings for making rules that you are missing parts of information for. A set of rules to use Mammouth Miniatures (see below) Dyak Kyaks and Prahus, very nice TSATF variant entitled The Kris and the Flame by Chris Ferree. Then there are some editorial type pieces well worth reading: one by Scott Saylors concerning historically accurate gaming and one by Chris Engel (Matrix Fame) about the Muslim perspective of colonial gaming.

16. Savage and Soldier Old issues with some updating at: www.dnai.com/~soongliu/SavageAndSoldier I went to this site and was surprised by the amount of information added over the last two years since I was last there. Anyway, the newest material is from Howard Whitehouse, published in three parts--on Darkest Africa. It is mostly about Zanzibar, characters, and full of great information for conducting campaign expeditions onto the unexplored Darkest Continent. Highly Recommended! Full of great information.

17. ColonialWars@onelist.com, another colonial site. You must first go to onelist.com find colonial wars and ask to subscribe, once you are accepted you start receiving all the email/chat.

18. Warrior Miniatures, 14 Tiverton Ave. Glasgow, G32 9NX Scotland. 0141 778 3426 www.warrioronline.demon.co.uk I went to Warrior Miniatures and saw that they have a very nice selection of both 15 and 25 mm figures for Zulu, Sudan, Afghan Wars.

While there I came across a link called England Invaded, the site Over The Wire Games and Miniatures looked pretty interesting. There are rules and figures for the invasion of England by Germany circa 1898 which looks very interesting. It is apparently a squad (10 figs) based set of rules. There is too much to go into without having the set of rules but the site has scenarios, rules additions, background info (very interesting reading), definitely not a Sudan campaign against savages, this is the realm of Victorian sci-fi, cool stuff, different uniforms but look very good. Check this out!!!

19. magweb.com http://www.magweb.com If you are reading this on magweb--how about a paper subscription!! Magweb has over 80 different magazines here, Wow. See in the PW Review a review and game report by Wally Simon of Howard Whitehouse's Science vs. Pluck in the April 2000, the latest, issue.

20. Regiment, Nexus House, Azalea Dr., Swanley, Kent BR8 8HU. This is sounding like a broken record. Very good and well done Stuart!! Unfortunately Stuart sent me the following email. REGIMENT has ceased publication with immediate effect - stated reason - insufficient profit. Royal Marines Part 2 will be the last issue.

Issue 53 Royal Marines Part 1: 1664-1913 This may be the last review for Regiment as Part 2 has yet to show up. Starting on page 46 is Imperial Marines 1857-1899, there are bunches of photos and a brief description of the various small wars the Royal Marines were in. In most of the photos the Marines are in dress uniforms the exceptions being Naval Brigade and Marines in the Zulu War, with the Guards Camel Regiment 1885, Egyptian War, Nile 1898, Boer War, Boxer Rebellion, and Albania 1913.

21. And That's the Way it Was, 213 3rd St. NE, Hickory, NC 28601-5124 This is where to get your copy of The Sword And The Flame , this is a great set of rules and at 52 pages it is packed with great information and packaged very nicely. My favorite set of rules!!!! See the review of the October offering, very nice. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

23. Military Illustrated, 45 Willowhayne Ave. East Preston, West Sussex, BN16 1PL UK.

Number 153 Contains an article "Imperial Headhunters" by Ian Knight that will make you think about how great the British Imperial forces really were compared to other Imperial powers. Some great photographs.

Issue 154 Ian Knight must write in his sleep better than most people do awake, how does he get so much written. Ian has an article in this issue "Fighting the Maoris" (check out Eureka Miniatures [#38 below] for Maori Wars figures). Ian has written another great article on a little know colonial war, once again proving that the 'savages' are a lot more sophisticated than we generally like to think. Included are great illustrations and two photographs of outstanding sculptures of Maori warriors. There is also an article by Patrick Mercer "Forgotten Bloodbath" about Inkerman in the Crimean War including photographs of the battlefield today. Very nice. Great reading for both articles.

24. Miniature Wargames, reported by Stuart Asquith: Miniature Wargames -- No Report yet may be when Stuart resettles in the country we'll hear from him.

25. Principles of War, The Magazine

26. The Journal of America's Military Past, PO Box 1151, Fort Myer, VA 22211-0151.

27. The London War Room www.thelondonwarroom.com Check this site out, they now carry Richard Houston's Naval Guns in 25mm. Scans of each gun are added after they are painted. Highly Recommended!!!!!

28. On Military Matters, tel: 609-466-2329. www.onmilitarymatters.com email: militarymatters@worldnet.att.net

29. Bicorne Miniatures www.Bicorne.co.uk Bicorne has Italian and Abyssinians in 25 mm, very nice figures too. The line is about 20 figs currently and is to expand to 100+ figs including Ansars, Egyptians NWF, Highlanders, Sudan Brits, and Sikhs. These will include the typical figure attitudes as well as stretcher-bearers and are sold individually. Figures as view on the site are painted. See the ad in Wargames Illustrated #161. Bicorne also carries the Connoisseur range of colonials including three personalities: Gordon, Graham and Kitchner all on horseback. These figures look very good and I would recommend them.

30. Mammoth Miniatures www.mammoth-miniatures.co.uk This site contains Scheltrum Miniatures, which has a great line of unusual figs for Victorian SciFi as well as Dyaks. There is a Dyak war Prahu, 27cm long, a Kora with outriggers 23 cm long plus three sets of Dyak warriors of ten figs each in 25 mm. The Victorian SciFi includes vehicles for Ironclad Empires: steam powered vehicles such as a French Aerial Torpedo Destroyer, Aether Marines, a tunneling machine, steam powered tank, steam powered stagecoach and a Zeppelin among other fantastic models of resin and metal all for 25 mm. Great painted vehicles to view. If you want Victorian SciFi these are some cool models to begin with.

31. Britannia Miniatures www.wargame.com/britannia Have figures for Pershing's hunt for Villa in 1916, Sudan 1884, and the NWF, unfortunately no pictures.

32. David A. Clayton, P.O. Box 574, Kennesaw, GA 30144, carries Fantassin Miniatures of Spain. The one colonial period is the Spanish-American War in 15mm the line has 23 different packs. http://members.xoom.com/bayonette/hhfone.htm

33. Lord Al's Expeditionary Supply, 2819 Columbine, Nashville, TN 37204-3103,carries Dixon, Foundry, Essex, FAA, 1st Corps and more. Email: GAISERCO@BELLSOUTH.NET

34. Ral Partha figures are available from Star Books and Games, 3848 Tower Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45248, (812) 637-1633 Sbgames999@Aol.com Apparently the Ral Partha line was sold to Thunderbolt Miniatures and their exclusive US dealer is Star Games. The old prices are still good.

35. Greenhill Books, Stackpole Books www.greenhillbooks.com I received a copy of The 1865 Customs of Service for Non-commissioned Officers and Soldier by Capt. August Kautz. I would like one of our readers to read this, it will then be yours to keep, and send in a short review concerning whether or not it would be useful for rules, just glancing at the tables in the Commissary Sgt. section I can it will be quite useful for campaigning and one off games.

36. Reviresco Figures, www.tin-soldier.com This appears to be a relatively new site, to me anyway, and they have loads of figures for the colonial period. From Brits of WWI Africa, Kings African Rifles, to German Protectorate troops, also Captain Nemo in undersea gear WOW is all I have to say. See the Review and figure scans. They also carry Naval guns and equipment. RECOMMENDED

37. Breese Books, www.sherlockholmes.co.uk I found this book at Barnes and Nobles while looking for something else but it turned out to be quite a find: Sherlock Holmes and the Tomb of Terror by Val Andrews ($12.95). There were a few other titles for these new Sherlock Holmes books but none seemed as intriguing as this. Holmes and Watson travel across the Sahara to a remote Arab enclave and save the kingdom (well, duh!). This is a little off-track for colonial wargaming, but this book presented several interesting ideas for scenarios. Preparation for cross-desert travel, contact with North African Arabs, deserted in the desert, out of water, sealed in a tomb, foiling the wily Arabs bad guys. Anyway there are several ideas for using Mycroft Holmes and the British Government for some Vic Sci Fi ideas. This even read like a Conan Doyle Holmes story. Well written Very nice, I'm going to look for some more of these.

38. Eureka Miniatures, 10 Wooryl St. Carnegie, Vic. 3163, Australia www.eurekamin.com.au I ordered some figures and will review them next issue. Eureka also has a service if you need a specific figure(s) they will commission them to be sculpted once a certain number has been ordered, either in 15mm or 25mm, check this service out online. Not too many figures are pictured online so it is difficult to get an idea of what you might be buying. However, I will try to alleviate that next issue.
