Twenty Significant Historic Battles
of KwaZulu-Natal

Book Review

reviewed by Ian Knight

Twenty Significant Historic Battles of KwaZulu-Natal, by Ken Gillings, is pretty much what it says; a glossy soft-cover booklet, published in South Africa and obviously aimed at the tourist market. Each battle is neatly summed up in three or four pages of good concise accounts. There are maps and contemporary illustrations, but most of all there are stunning photos of the battlefields as they are today. Subjects chosen include Shaka's Wars, Blood River, the Anglo-Zulu War, Zulu civil war of the 1880s, and 1st and 2nd Boer Wars. All in all, this is a good introductory account, with a lot to offer wargamers.
