6. MWAN, Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Drive, Richton Park, IL 60471, $35.00 a year for six issues. I have been without a MWAN fix for several months due to a Post Office snafu, now that my brain has received a fix I'm much saner.

Issue 105

Great ending to Hal's editorial-no I won't tell-read it! Two articles stand out for colonial gamers the first by Rich Barbuto "Going it alone: The Solo Wargamers Corner" contains a scenario and rules for San Jacinto, very interesting-good to use with the new figures coming from Cannon Fodder. The other article by Howard Whitehouse "Wargames Scenery for the Common Man: So Why do we want good terrain anyway". This contains good detailed instructions on making scenery with masonite and blueboard just what I am attempting so this will come in very handy. The instructions are simple as is the concept Howard uses yet he makes some outstanding looking scenery. I should know as nearly all mine was made by Howard except for some pine bark rock outcrops that he also writes about. What a man, a blessing to the hobby!

Issue 106

Contains several articles of colonial nature one by Scott Hansen "Russo-Japanese War Scenario-Yosheri" great stuff read it! "Skulking in the Rear" by Whitehoouse is well worth reading. Howard's "The Lion Eats Tonight-Rules for Hunting Big Game" is not only amusing but a great set of rules, unless you're the hunter. I'd much rather play Derek the Rhino.

Issue 107 contains a great article, scenario and game report on "Lone Star and Lion" by Steve Carroll. The basic concept is that Texas remains independent and colonizes, along with other countries, a new island in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa. Very imaginative and very well worth the reading to steal ideas and rules.

Issue 108

Contains a game report from Historicon by Howard Whitehouse using his "Lion Eats Tonight" Rules very amusing makes you want to play right now. There are scenarios by Scott Hansen (both 19th C wars in Europe and Russo-Japanese War), Dean Halley (on a wild west scenario), and a review of colonial Connoisseur figures by Mark Brown. All well worth reading.

Just because I didn't mention the letters column and any other articles that they are not worth reading. I read the MWAN from cover to cover and always come away with ideas and renewed gaming vigour. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

7. Cannon Fodder Miniatures, P.O. Box 36604, Winnellie 0821 NT, Australia. Email: gregoryblake@bigpond.com SEE THE AD. See the Review Also check out their web site Check out the free flags pages, These are really fine flags made just for 28mm figures. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

8. Lone Warrior, US- 1707 Ridge Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Lone Warrior HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

9. Victorian Military Society, Dan Allen, 20 Priory Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7QN Great Britain. If you don't belong to the Victorian Military Society you should, and tell them the Heliograph sent you. Soldiers of the Queen Issue 102 Well, someone forgot to take the Heliograph ad off the inside back cover, I'm glad they did. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

10. The Melik Society, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW, Great Britain. The purpose of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of British and Sudanese history, particularly the development of river gunboats and the achievements of those involved in the military campaigns between 1883 and 1899. One of the immediate objectives is to facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats Melik and Bordein so that they can be exhibited, maintained and demonstrated to the general public. Every dollar or pound helps. Highly recommended charity!!!!

11. Wargames Illustrated, 18 Lovers Lane, Newark, Notts. NG24 1HZ Great Britain.

Issue 159

This issue contains only one colonial article, but ads for two companies with figures. The article by Harry Pearson "Vera Cruz" is a scenario based on the 1953 movie. The article is mostly a description of the movie with interesting comments, OB, set up and figures and buildings. Pearson recommends Ansell's "Rules with No Name" and Featherstone's "Skirmish Wargames" as the rules to use. Quite a readable article with very interesting ideas. As to the ads, Icon Miniatures, Ltd., Dept. 11, No. 2 Beluga Building, Mount Street, New Basford, Nottingham, NG7 7HX www.harlequin-miniatures.com ad shows a photo of ZW1003 Unmarried Zulus very nice!!!!! The list includes four packs of unmarried Zulus and two of British Infantry. Each pack contains eight figures. If these figures are a typical gauge then the rest should be very nice figures. If anyone has any figures from Icon write us a review. I am going to write for samples. The address in Mount St. New Basford sounds like it must be quite close to the Foundry's former factory. The Foundry ad shows new figures for the Wild West of Jayhawkers. Very Nice and don't meet these guys in a dark alley!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

12. Osprey Military Journal, Osprey Direct, P.O. Box 140, Wellingborough, Northants, NN8 4ZA Great Britain. www.ospreypublishing.com

Volume 2 Issue 6

This issue contains a very nice article by David Nicolle "The Blue and the Grey in Egypt: American Civil War Veterans in Egyptian Service, 1868-1883." I enjoyed reading this and it has tons of possibilities for the table top. Nice illustrations including color to act as uniform painting guides. However, according to Nicolle you would not want to be under American command as most of the time they lost and I get the feeling it was through incompetence. 13. 19. magweb.com http://www.magweb.com If you are reading this on magweb--how about a paper sunscription. Over 75 different magazines here, Wow.

20. Regiment, Nexus House, Azalea Dr., Swanley, Kent BR8 8HU. Issue 52, The Irish Guards, 1900-2000. How fortuitous that it should the Irish Guards. Anyway, the earliest guards were formed for the Boer War and a photograph is included of a private as part of the mounted infantry (1900). How could you not like this magazine if you are interested in the British colonial period, it is so useful for uniform info, and the color isn't bad either. Next issue another favorite unit of mine--The Royal Marines, Yes!!! This is sounding like a broken record. Very good. Well done! Stuart!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

21. And That's the Way it Was, 213 3rd St. NE, Hickory, NC 28601-5124 This is where to get your copy of The Sword and the Flame, this is a great set of rules and at 52 pages it is packed with great information and packaged very nicely. My favorite set of rules!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

23. Military Illustrated, 45 Willowhayne Ave. East Preston, West Sussex, BN16 1PL UK £35 or $100 for a year sub. What an outrageous amount. Buy the issues you want individually they are cheaper that way.

24. Miniature Wargames, reported by Stuart Asquith: Colonial aspects of Miniature Wargames No 211 "Warcries in the Woods" A wargame set during King Philip's War in the American Colonies in 1675". Pictorial (only) reviews of ACW figures from Redoubt Enterprises.

25. Principles of War, The Magazine

26. The Journal of America's Military Past, PO Box 1151, Fort Myer, VA 22211-0151. Volume 27, No. 1. There are several interesting articles in here: "'I do not feel myself equal to the command': George Washington's Early Military Experiences" by Robert Dunkerly, "Indian Fights of the Fur Trade" by C.R. Bell (great stuff for skirmishing especially when the Foundry comes out with their Fur Trappers and Traders line of figures), and "Incident at Apache Pass" by Charles K. Mills. This is a great article to use your Western figures whether from Foundry, Essex or Old Glory for several skirmishes or any Civil War era infantry, yes infantry in the west vs Apaches. This whole skirmish campaign starts with a kidnapping at Johnny Ward's Ranch and ends with the surrender of Cochise. In the early 1960s Johnny Ward's Ranch was archaeologically excavated. The artifacts point to very few shots being exchanged during the kidnapping as only 31 cartridges were recovered of 16 different types and manufacturers. There were other bits and pieces of cartridges and bullets but no others that could be identified. So that a short fire-fight took place and there is no indication of any wounded at the ranch. I would expect that a portion of the cartridges to have been fired that have nothing to do with the kidnapping, as it is not unusual to find cartridges and bullets at rural 19th and 20th century archaeological sites. Any way this article has some great potential for a skirmish level campaign.

27. The London War Room www.thelondonwarroom.com Check this site out, they now carry Richard Houston's Naval Guns in 25mm. Scans of each gun are added after they are painted. Highly Recommended!!!!!

28. On Military Matters, tel: 609-466-2329. www.onmilitarymatters.com email: militarymatters@worldnet.att.net Catalog 16d has some interesting books. Horse Color Explained ($20) by Gower written for horse breeders, it apparently has 200+ color photos making it worthwhile to use as a painting guide. Hill and Hogg A Black Corps d'Elite Sudanese troops under French Command in Mexico, supposedly second only to the Foreign Legion ($30). Crowder's West African Resistance ($40) expensive but worth it as a research tool. The catalog has many other useful titles for the colonial period.

29. Khyber Pass Games at http://usuarios.iponet.es/gehiegi/kpg/index.htm This is a website by the former Heliograph editor Andrew Preziosi and it is a commercial site offering boardgames. They/he is developing several colonial era games which should be ready by now. Sand in the Whirlwind and Dahomey. Sand concerns the Anglo-Senussi Campaign, 1915-1916. The game includes two full color maps, counters and rules. I have not played the game, the stuff on the web site looks good. However, also based on the web site the game scale makes this game very strange and not particularly satisfying to me. Each hex is 25 miles across and each game turn is two weeks. Not for me! But give it a look for yourself.

30. Clash of Empires, Keith Frye, 33 Ridge Road, Bloomingdale, NJ 07403.

Double issue 7/8

Forty-eight pages, with a color cover, of great stuff. There are six articles, letters and reviews. There are maps, OBs, uniform info, and illustrations. What more could you ask for. Glad to see this back it has been a while. Highly Recommended! for gamers interested in European 19th C. If you are interested check out the new line of 1866 Austrian Army 15mm figs by Cannon Fodder.

31. National Archives and Records Administration, www.nara.gov/publications/prologue/boxer.html This site has a great article by Trevor K. Plante entitled U.S. Marines in the Boxer Rebellion. The article has info useful for gaming and scenario development. Changing the address from boxer to fisher is an article "Private Harry Fisher's True Identity" about a medal of honor winner in the boxer Rebellion.
