Stuart Asquith, Regiment Many thanks for The Heliograph No 119, safely received - another enjoyable issue and thank you for the mentions for REGIMENT, very much appreciated. I too was down at Winchester recently for REGIMENT -We are featuring the Gurkhas over two issues this year, and The Light Infantry over two issues next year. Noting your interest in the Gurkhas, I have ordered a copy of each of the two Gurkha issues to be sent to you with my compliments. My wife went with me and after the business meeting with the Gurkha chappies, we looked around their museum and that of The Royal Green Jackets, with, as you say, that wonderful Waterloo diorama which I had all to myself while I was there. The next day I had to meet with The Light Infantry Regimental Secretary, so after that we looked around their museum. Great place. Ref Miniature Wargames, I subscribe to this (well, I reckon I need to keep my toe in the water so I will gladly keep you updated via e mail re any colonial content if that's OK? You have covered up to 205 and say, if I'm right, that your sub is up with 206, so I'll start sending in with 207? No problem with the Gurkha issues of REGIMENT. I've just sent the text and photos for Part 1 off to the designer in Swanley (at the Nexus office) as my wife and I are going away for a few days break in the countryside, so I thought I'd clear my desk first. When I come back it's finish off the Gurkhas and then start on The Irish Guards then a two parter on The Royal Marines. This year's PW annual has been quashed due to adjudged poor sales of last year's. The fact that marketing did absolutely NOTHING with it might be a factor of course... I am slobbering all over my keyboard waiting for the Gurkhas and Marines issues. That's not to say I don't like the Guards. As to the Gurkha issues I asked Stuart-since I already have a sub-if he minded if I were to give them to someone(s) in the readership, no problem was the answer , no not yet don't ask, when I have them I will tell you. I really feel bad about PW Annual especially since PW is gone there were some really great issues and Stuart should be very proud of the job he did. Greg Blake, Cannon Fodder Miniatures In regards to credit cards just say that my first foray into the world of high finance was bloodily repulsed but in the true ANZAC spirit I will try again and again until one of the buggers gives in and says yes! I asked at another bank today and they actually smiled at me. That might be an encouraging sign [?] I have found out that the banks here will cash personal checks written in foreign currency, in your case USD. The catch is it takes 28 days to clear and costs $15 per check. I don't mind the wait if buyers don't mind adding the equivalent of AUD$15 to cover the costs. I'll despatch the goods on receipt of the order and trust the check writer. With the current exchange rate in favour of the USD the Aussie $15 works out to be about USD$8, not that much really. I had a good two weeks away. I got hold of a swag of books that will help with a project I want to undertake to do the USN/USMC in China ca.1920 [Sand Pebbles]. I'll also do Chinese warlord troops and the recent Osprey book will get heavily used for inspiration. The first things I will do are an 03 Springfield rifle, a 1918 model BAR, and a pump action trench gun. Is there any chance of getting a copy of the publication in which the Anglo-Irish review I wrote appears? I am currently preparing another assault upon the banks in my quest to convince them that CFM needs merchant credit card facilities. One of the things I have to do is prepare a business plan. As part of that exercise I would like to ask a favor of you. If you don't mind could you please email a message to me requesting that CFM establish credit card facilties and how much more convienient this would be for you. This might help me convince the banks to play ball. If you could find the time to do that I would greatly appreciate it. I enjoyed your account of your visit to the UK. One of these days I must get to the Rifles Museum. I knew a fellow here who has served in the Rifles for about 10 years before returning to Australia [he had British parents and thus was allowed to join the Brit army]. He never stopped speaking of his old regiment. How's the summer in SC? As I made a mistake in a previous issue about Greg taking credit cards-he was researching that idea with banks-Greg has kept me somewhat updated concerning that. Sorry to say it has not yet occurred. Yes, I will send you a copy of the book review Journal when it appears. Summer in SC has been HOT, not fortuantely as hot as Dallas TX, and very dry. We are currently nearly a off a full years rain over the last three years. Jeff Johnson Here is the first of the items that I promised to send in to help out with content for upcoming issues of The Heliograph. You are doing a great job with the publication so the least that we readers can do is to write something once in a while. This is a piece on the new colonial naval sets from Reviresco, and I will attach both the MS-Word file and some illustrations in jpeg format that I copied from the Reviresco web page. (I don't think there's a problem with copyright if we are using them in a review article.) I hope all the attachments come through to you OK. I know that some service providers (such as AOL) have a hard time with attachments to messages. Greg Blake I thought I better drop you a note so that you didn't begin to think I had dropped off the planet or fallen under a bus. I haven't had much to send you lately but I am working on an Italian Askari at the moment and there are a couple more Italians waiting for a mould. I have made a nice BAR and a shotgun for my proposed USN in China project. These are awaiting a mould as well. I've gotten a little sidetracked lately and have been working on some Texas War of Indepence figures. I though that you might like to see some CFM Anglo-Irish fellows putting the hard word on Foundry's Vicar. The CFM Auxiliary looks like he is going to give the good father a hard time. The truck is scratch built by John O'Connell. Since I have been off line so to speak for months, only bearly answering email, I figured everyone would think I had gone off. But no I am still here much to ya'lls sorrow. I think the Sand Pebbles idea a good one that will help us all use our Boxers and Chinese pirates for something else. Ed Mikus The December 1999 issue 116 of the Heliograph mentioned copies of old books reproduced by Pallas Armata. Do you have an address for Garth Simon? Finally, I receivedd a mounted figure of Loring Pasha from Greg Blake of Cannon Fodder. Recommended. My order included an Italian Colonial Officer and two versions of an Italian Colonial Soldier; one with one with and the other without helmet. Also Greg sent aa sample of a new figure for the conflicts in Ireland. This one is a British army regular wearing an overcoat, helmet and equipment. A very good figure which has raised my interest in this period. My wife Trudi and I had the good fortune of meeting Gerry and Caroline Webb of Castaway Arts and Nic Robson of Eureka Miniatures at Historicon. Ian Knight gave an excellent presentation of selected African campaigns and Boxer Rebellion. Later we had refreshments with Ian and the Webbs. Enclosed you will find a photograph of Loring Pasha from the book The Blue And The Grey on the Nile by William B. Hesseltine and Hazel C. Wolf (University of Chicago Press, 1961). A brief sketch of the Pasha was printed in A Biographical Dictionary of the Sudan by Richard Hill (Frank Cass and Company, 1967 second edition). I would say that the Cannon Fodder Casting is an excellent portrayal. I wish I had been able to attend There were loads of people, actually everyone you mentioned, that I really wanted to talk with. I really like Loring Pasha and the new Italians from Greg, see the write up and review. See the photos attached here. The address for Gareth Simon is 98 Priory Road, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 2BP, Great Britain Andrew Maxhill Following your advertisement in Soldiers of the Queen 101, I should be grateful if you would accept my subscription for the Heliograph. Your advertisement does not mention whether back issues are available and you could perhaps let me know when sending out the Heliograph! Aside from German Colonial actions I am also interested in the Force Publique and American Operations in the Philippines, the latter of which my club, The Whitehall Warlords, intend to present as a wargame at next years VMS show. Welcome to the fold of intelligent colonial gamers, or so we like to think. Bob Burke has an index of past issues to about 65 or so. A list of past articles from issue 103 to 118 is above, which Bob will be able to supply. His address is Robert W. Burke Jr., 4726 Appaloosa Ct., Antioch, CA 94509 I would like to know more about what the Whitehall Warlords presentation at VMS, rules, figures, scale, terrain etc. Back to The Heliograph #120 Table of Contents Back to The Heliograph List of Issues Back to Master Magazine List © Copyright 2000 by Richard Brooks.
