6. MWAN, Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Drive, Richton Park, IL 60471, $35.00 a year for six issues. Number 104 "Russo-Japanese War Scenario" by Scott Hansen is an interesting scenario using his command control card decks. Too bad the map did not accompany the article. Scott how about a short article explaining your card system. "Aelred Glidden's Zulu Rules" is a single page set of rules that are worth the effort to try them out. "Review of Connoisseur 25mm Colonial Range" by Mark Brown the review is a little choppy, like it is missing a few words here and there. But the descriptions of the figure bags is quite adequate and useful. Since I have some of these figures already in my armies I could stand to have some more, of course, command figures I must contact J&T miniatures, HC83, Box 15, Pequot Lakes, MN 56472. Overall another fine issue by Hal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

9. Victorian Military Society, Dan Allen, 20 Priory Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7QN Great Britain. If you don't belong to the Victorian Military Society you should, and tell them the Heliograph sent you. Soldiers of the Queen, issue 100, March 2000. Some good articles, the best was "The 'Wretched' Campaign of J. C. Russell, 12th Lancers: Zululand 1879" by Ian Castle. Russell was given command of the First Imperial Mounted Infantry, as Brevet Major, because command had to go to a serving officer not a colonial. Anyway the article provides plenty of ideas, as well as a good read, for a combat shy regimental commanding officer to add to your scenarios. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

10. The Melik Society, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW, Great Britain. The purpose of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of Britiah and Sudanese history, particularly the development of river gunboats and the achievements of those involved in the military campaigns between 1883 and 1899. One of the immediate objectives is to facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats Melik and Bordein so that they can be exhibited, maintained and demonstrated to the general public. Every dollar or pound helps. Highly recommended charity!!!!

11. Wargames Illustrated, 18 Lovers Lane, Newark, Notts. NG24 1HZ Great Britain. No. 153 see page 49 for a color photo from Marston Magna 2000 report of The Bristol Naval Wargames Club's South American Gunboats WOW!!! A construction article "An Egyptian's House" by Herb Gundt is useful if you need more structures for your Egyptian Campaigns. No. 154 Gary Chalk's "Building Wargames Terrain: Any Port in a Storm" is a must read. Even if you are not building a port this article has some great ideas and tips for building scenery. If you don't want a port you need a beach for those wide African rivers or for landing your British troops at some hot spot to fight the natives. This article also has very good ideas for building your own sectional terrain for your table REALLY REALLY GOOD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

20. Regiment, Nexus House, Azalea Dr., Swanley, Kent BR8 8HU. Issue 46 contains The Royal Air Force Regiment. Issue 47 contains British Army Lancer Regiment 1816-1914. All colonial issue of eight lancer regiments. There are two color plates of the 21st in Khakis (1898), B/W of the 16th as a detachment of the Camel Regt. (1884-85), a color of the 12th in khaki (1876-87) and a b/w (ca. 1899), two b/ws of the 5th, first of a detachment for the light camel regtr. (1884-85) and of the Vickers gun detactment (1903). There are loads of other b/w and color photographs and drawings of uniforms, mostly dress, and Stuart Asquith's text add quite a bit to the whole. Issue 48 "The Queen's Lancashire Regiment part 1: 1689-1881" contains a b/w of a painting dated 1880 after the battle of Ahmed Khel and another of the 59th in summer dress in Hong Kong in 1859. Lots of other photos most of service and dress uniforms. Next issue should be quite good. There are also b/w and color from the Crimean War. Another great effort by Stuart Asquith. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

21. And That's the Way it Was, 213 3rd St. NE, Hickory, NC 28601-5124 As I said last issue this is where to get your copy of The Sword and the Flame, this is a great set of rules and at 52 pages it is packed with great information and packaged very nicely.

22. Regimental Orders, Victorian Tymes, 22 Kennard Road, New Milton, Hants, BH25 5JU, UK £ 4 or $7 for a year. If you are interested in uniforms and equipment this is for you. High Recommended!

23. Military Illustrated, 45 Willowhayne Ave. East Preston, West Sussex, BN16 1PL UK £ 35 or $100 for a year sub. What an outrageous amount.

24. Miniature Wargames, I have one more issue before my sub is up and I am not renewing this. I would appreciate it if someone out there who has a sub would write up a short paragraph or so on any interesting articles. No. 204 Martin Hackett's "Stuck up the Nile" is a very nice scenario with OB and rules. When I can I will try this About 100 Brit/Indian infantry with 3 guns, 3 boats, 5 cav and 12 camel corps. WHile the Mahdi has about 200 infantry and 47 cav and camel. Very nice illustrations. The cover has a close up from Rorke's Drift. No. 205 nothing colonial but they seem to have taken up the idea ofphotos or scans of new figures, but unfortunately with no review or addresses. So you really have to know who CFM is (Cannon Fodder Miniatures).

24. Military History, June 2000 The Personality Column has an interesting article entitled "An American missonary's engineering talents made him an unlikely hero during the Boxer Rebllion" by Joe Shepter. Unfortunately it is less than two pages long but does contain some useful information for gaming and/or recreating the legation.
