The Warlord of the Air

Book Review

by Richard Brooks

The Warlord of the Air by Michael Moorcock is the first of two adventures of Oswald Bastable, the second being The Land Leviathan which I'll review next issue. In this first alternate Victorian world Bastable leads 300 cavalry and infantry into the Himalayas on an expedition in 1902 and the Temple of Teku Benga. Trying to escape from an assination attempt his men are killed by the natives or during a massive earthquake which only he survives. He finds himself rescued by a Royal Indian Air Service dirigible in 1973. He has various adventures while adjusting to life in the 1970s by taking service on dirigibles and zepplins. Bastable is captured, along with Che Guevara and Lenin, by a European/Chinese Warlord who has an atomic bomb and wants to take over the world. The bomb explosion somehow sends Bastable back to 1902 six months after his expedition to Teku Benga, or is it his 1902?

This is a rip snorting book of 175 pages. Unfortunately its been out of print from DAW Books for at least 22 years, but you should be able to find it at used paperback book dealers. If you can get your hands on this book it will give you lots of ideas for alternate Victorian adventures to use your figures with especially if you bought a Lego Zepplin. Highly Recommended
