Figure Review

by Richard Brooks

The Foundry, figures available in the US from Pendragon Miniatures, 1549 Marview Dr., Westlake, OH 44145, 440-871-4587, fax 440-892-5887. Guernsey Foundry, Hubert's Lane, Off Doyle Road, St. Peter Port, Gurnsey, GY1 1RG, Channel Islands, Great Britain.

Please note that as of April all Foundry orders will come from their new facility in Nottingham. I also note that their are several jobs available with the Foundry, including one for editor, for which I raise my hand. Although being an American makes it almost impossible to get a job in England. But I'm still available.

DA59 Tribal Musketmen in European Hats and Coats - 8 men, 7 with muskets, 1 double barrel shotgun, 4 with hats. very nicely detailed.
DA150 Azande Characters - command pack includes drummer and hornist? Great Animation, very nice detail.
DA151 Azande Warriors I - nice animation great sculpting great knives.
DA152 Azande Warriors II - fair animation, good detail but not as good as 151.
DA153 Azande Warriors III - great hats with feathers fierce facial expression.
DA154 Azande Bodyguards with Rifles - Almost a uniform, 1 with shotgun, animation OK, but not great, useful figures, might have 1 or 2 shooting rather than just advancing.
DA235 Belgian Askari Characters - WOW heads on stakes I LOVE IT. Includes drummer, buglar and standard bearer for a command stand. However, I am not sure about the naked guy, where does he fit in the command?. Good animation, detail, useful poses in askari command. See page 16 for illustrations.

PIRATES

Cut Throats 24 Chinese Pirates I and Cut Throats 24A Chinese Pirates II

While these are two different packs I will review them together. These figures will be great for the Colonial period someone new to fight in Southeast Asia. BUT, what happened here. This is almost like an Old Glory bag. There are only 11 poses here and too much similarity. There are four of the same pose with musket, two of one pose with sword and two of another, even if they have different heads. There has been great imagination on most of the other pirate packs but way too much similarity here with only 16 figures. They all have the same costume, why? somebody run out of ideas?
Overall, the animation - is almost OK, and could be better, good detailing in what here. I hope we will soon see some Burmese and Malaysian Pirates to add to the Cuthroats line, even if these are not strickly for the Colonials. See below for illustrations.
