MWAN #103, Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Drive, Richton Park, IL 60471, $35.00 a year for six issues. There are two short article concerning TSATF both by Russ Lockwood, one a review of the new edition rules and the other a battle report. Both worth reading. Michael Huskey has taken Jack Scruby's Mafrica into the 20th century with a background article that has quite a bit of promise for those who fight 20th Century colonial wars in the second part-an after action report. Stephen Lawrence has a set of rules for 19th century darkest Africa with all the typical movement, firing, morale melee and special rules. The special rules include machineguns, pygmies and my favorite Random happenings. There are troop type qualities, weapons, animal stats and sample character cards. Definitely worth reading. MWAN is full of other great articles and as always a great read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! 7. Miniature Wargames. Recommended Reading! No. 199, no colonial articles. No. 200, congratulations on reaching 200!! Two articles caught my eye, first, Stuart Asquith's "The Library of War Gaming." this is an excellent list of books as I have read most of them over the past 40 years or so. This is nice to see the list to fill in some blanks on my reading agenda. The second, by Andy Callan entitled "Carry on up the Abddab." which contains six scenarioes for various periods of Afghan wars from Alexander the Great to 1998. Prelude to Catasrtophe 1841 and Soldiers of the Queen 1880 were both quite good and had several interesting ideas to steal. No. 201 has a cavalry versus indians scenario that has a few interesting ideas. 8. Cannon Fodder Miniatures, P.O. Box 36604, Winnellie 0821 NT, Australia. SEE THE REVIEW. Soldiers of the Queen issue 99 contains articles relating to the Second Anglo-Boer War Centenary. This is issue is ideal for background material, as well as the great photographs if you are into the Boer War, or this is good enough to start you on your way. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!! 12. The Melik Society, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW, Great Britain. The purpose of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of Britiah and Sudanese history, particularly the development of river gunboats and the achievements of those involved in the military campaigns between 1883 and 1899. One of the immediate objectives is to facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats Melik and Bordein so that they can be exhibited, maintained and demonstrated to the general public. Every dollar or pound helps. Highly recommended charity!!!! 13. Wargames Illustrated, 18 Lovers Lane, Newark, Notts. NG24 1HZ Great Britain. No. 148 WOW! this issue is full of great stuff for colonials. If you are into naval pre-dreadnought there is a set of rules as well as a scenario for the Russo-Japanese War by Colin Standish. Chris Peers, this man is prolific, has part 2 of "In the Heart of Africa" covering terrain and the begnning of the rules. The rules here cover movement visibility, fire, melee, morale, baggage, strategems and fortifications. This is great stuff. Then there is "Skirmishing Wild West Movies #5. The definitive John Wayne skirmish" by Ian Barstow. This scenario combines two great Wayne movies Rio Bravo and El Dorado, unfortunatelythere are too many good guys with skills and not enough bad guys. "The Whale who eats the Shark, Wargaming the French Campaign in Dahomey 1892. This is a very good introductory guide to the war. [ed note: I have an issue full of great illustrations and maps, but do not have any text. If someone has an interest in writting a text or game scenario please do so and it will be well illustrated.] Gary Chalk has an article about constructing a Spanish Church for use in pirate wars, with some modification the church could be made into a very nice colonial government building almost anywhere. WI #149 checkout the inside cover for Steve Barbar cavemen figures to use with your Lost World scenarios. Also see the back covers for painting ideas for your Azande as well as some of the figures I'm giving away this month. This issue has two great articles. Chris Peers has part three of "In the Heart of Africa: Army Lists". After reading through the intro and lists this is a great way to determine what units will make up your armies especially for the African and is based on points. Ian Heath has an article "Unfriendlies: The Abors of India's North-East Frontier". The article is an abridgement of Ian's book from Foundry Press India's Northeast Frontier Armies of the Nineteenth Century: Asia, Vol. 3. If the article is any indication this is a must have book for colonial enthusiasts. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! 14. Osprey, Osprey Direct,P.O.
