Figure Review

By Richard Brooks

The latest offering from Cannon Fodder Miniatures (P.O. Box 36604, Winnellie 0821 NT, Australia) are nine figures to add to their previous Sudan, Egyptian and Jungle lines.

A8 Enslaved Egyptian gun crew- three gunners with a Mahdist overseer. One Egyptian is carrying a shell, one pulling a lanyard and the third is smarting from the whip held by the Mahdist. All three slaves are thin compared to the Mahdist but not painfully so. Each is chained with leg irons which are very nicely detailed. The three faces are all different but are Egyptian not African as some of the other Egyptian variants are. The facial expressions are just right for slaves under the lash. The lanyard is a fine thread of lead, that I am amazed did not break off in shipment, that is a very nice touch. The Mahdist is very well detailed except for one minor attribute his eye detail is mostly missing on the figure I got and I assume that Greg can fix this easily on the master. Otherwise, the figure is great, I really like the whip and its' position, although I may twist the wrist slightly to the rear. Overall, I think this is a great addition to the line with very well detailed figures. This pack is a welcome addition to any Mahdist army of any manufacturer.

E5af Buglar/Standard Bearer, standing easy with African Features. Very nicely detailed and crisp. I like the facial features, expression and the stance. The buglar will work well with the marching Egyptians in the line. I believe Greg has a flag at his web site for this figure, but you'll need to add your own standard.

E6 Egyptian Officer standing easy. Once again the detail is sharp and crisp. I really like the stance of the figure, giving the impression of I can beat the world (Yeah until the Mahdists come over the hill). The mustachio and facial expression are great.

H7 Hadendowah warrior, charging, sword and rifle, variant of H2 Hadendowah warrior, charging with throwing stick. There's a little flash at the mold line on the upraised leg, but no big deal. The animation and expression are great. Hey, what more can you want charging shootinga rifle and swinging a sword, what fun.

H10 Hadendowah warrior, standing easy, spear, shield, throwing stick. Next to the gun crew I think this is my favorite figure, although truth be told it's a very hard decision. This figure is excellently detailed and animated.

JU9 Warrior, shaved head, top knot, grass kilt, charging wildly with spear and shield. Another great figure to add to your cannibalistic tribe of African headhunters. Thewrist decorations almost give hi Popeye arms, which doesn't bother me and should be hidden when painted up. This is a variant on the figure charging with the head, JU7 I believe.

The figures vary between 28 and 29mm from bottom of foot to eye level. There was a little flash on only one figure My overall impression is that these figures are well animated with detail that is sharp and crisp--I really like this whole line of figures. The figures are below along with the sampling of weapons that Greg also produces
