Issue 190 while a good read has nothing colonial in it.
Issue 191 also a good read but has nothing colonial in it.

7. Victorian Military Society, Dan Allen, 20 Priory Road, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7QN Great Britain. If you don't belong to the Victorian Military Society you should, and tell them the Heliograph sent you. Please NOTE the change of contact address.

Soldiers Small Book #46 has info on the May 8th Victorian Military Fair at the New Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street London. Also news from the study groups as well as various military societies, military museums, and commercial magazines. For colonial gamers I think that the Melik Society, 202 Lambeth Rd., London SEI 7JW Great Britain might be the most important. The general purpose of the society is advancing public awareness of British and Sudanese history, particularly the development of river gunboats in the military campaigns between 1883 and 1899, and to facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats Melik and Bordein.

Issue 96 March 1999 - contains two interesting articles: ... A very dangerous man': a profile of Henry Brackenbury" by Ian Harvie provides the reader with a good insight into Brackenbury as well as some senior generals of the late Victorian Army. Second "The fight at Chilas" by Rod MacNeil describes two actions at Chilas during the period 1892-93. MacNeil provides some very nice detail about the actions, suitable for the tabletop, as well as lists of KIA and WIA, most useful for determining how well your rules work or don't. This also shows how important it is to be able to determine wound location for severity, as some men are wounded two or three times rather than two or three wounded men.

From the Redoubt, VMS Wargames Study Group, subscription available from Ray Boyles, 19 Plantsbrook Road, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, B76 lEX Great Britain.

Issue 21, February 1999 contains two interesting pieces. The first by John French is a list of military illustrations for 1903 for the Illustrated London News. Very useful for ideas. Second is "The Battle of San Juan Hill: Spanish American War 1898" by Dave Elksis a brief description of the battle with wargaming notes and a comparison of figures necessary to game the action between the rules Soldiers of the Queen and Principles of War.

Ray also sent along a copies of issues 3 to 8 and contain variously interesting articles and bits and pieces, particularly a running discussion (5 to 7) of the use of the Heliograph in the Zulu War. The bits and pieces contain loads of ideas for scenarios.

Finally, Ray also sent "Indian Mutiny Rules" by Paul Trickett and Dean Whitehouse. So parts of the rules are interesting enough to steal fire/melee casualty table. But then the morale table, if I'm reading this right, is nearly impossible for anyone to make their morale at anytime they have to check it. Of course it could just be that I do not understand the mechanics of the rules, if so they are poorly written and need better explanation. Anyway there are parts and pieces to steal.

All of these VMS publications are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

8. Barnes and Nobles, 1-800-the-book.

9. Military History, at your newstand, $3.99. What an outrageous price for this magazine but this issue contains "British Retreat from Waziristan" by Mark Jacobsen. A six page article with photos and map describing the retreat of the Frontier Constabulary and Scouts from the border area posts to Fort Sandeman. Very interesting article as well as a good read full of ideas for gaming. The best photo in the piece is of a typical Wazir fortified village this will make you want one of these for your own table. I have not seen these photos published before.

10. Wargames Illustrated, available from Wargames, Box 278, Route 40 East, Tridelphia, WV 26059.

#138 this issue continues the "Maximilian Adventure in Mexico" by Richard Clarke. This third part contains the army information for campaigning or battles using Principles of War. There are also inspired ideas for random events cards that could be adapted for most any region or period.

... Splendid Fellows' A Masai Army for Darkest Africa" by Chris Peers is another great one, pictures of various Masias and their weapons are very useful. All the info you need for writing your own rules.

Again there is an article on gaming with the new pirates that Foundry is producing with color flags, "Hoist More Black Flags" by Kevin Dalimore, I made my copy to cut out. The article "'It's Cutlasses Now Men!"' by Gary Chalk is a seven page article on constructing pirate ships to go with the new Foundry pirate line. I ordered mine and they are great. The article contains full sized templates forconstructing the ships, very useful. The same ideas here can be used to construct various 19th century pirate of the South China Sea. Of course the ships would look more like junks but the basics are right here, just square off the bow some and shorten the quarterdeck and you have it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

15. Savage and Soldier, at www.dnai.com/soongliu/SavageAndSoldier

I recently check this out after receiving a note from Milton about new articles. The one that caught my eye was "The Colonial Wars of Imperial Germany" by Paul Beck with uniform drawings by Nick Stern. If you are interested in German Africa this is well worth reading.

I also found "A Note on Mahdist Flags" by Doug Johnson, drawings by Greg Rose to be quite informative. You can print out the flags reduce them on the copier a little and you have some really great looking flags.

16. Redoubt, in the US from Miniature Service Center, 1525 Bridge Street #163, Yuba City, CA 95993, 530-673-5169. A 15% discount still continues.

17. Howard Whitehouse, 312 Ridgecrest, LaFayette, GA 30728. Howard still has copies of his colonial classic book Battle in Africa for $10. If you don't have one you need it. This is the best of its kind! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Howard also makes some really great scenery modules or whole tables of scenery. I have some small scenery piece Howard made and they are outstanding, very functional, made to your specifications, good looking, and not that expensive. Give Howard a call. Highly Recommended!!

18. The Journal of Military History, vol. 63, no 2. April 1999. Try your library. This issue has an interesting article "Raiding Strategy: As Applied by the Western Confederate Cavalry in the American Civil War" by Christopher Dwyer. Very interesting reading.
