MWAN #97, Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Drive, Richton Park, IL 60471, $35.00 a year for six issues. The back cover is a color photo of Redoubt figures "Isandhlawana". Nothing more self-gratifying then seeing the very same article in two magazines in the same month. Surely, David Barnes, you could have remembered where you sent your article and not sent copies to two different magazines (MWAN and Lone Warrior). Anyway there are several good articles for the colonial period in this issue. "Monk's Corner and Aelred Glidden's First Boer War Rules"; I think this is Prior Aelred's first time with colonials, his rules are always fun and quick to play and at less than a page it's certainly worth trying. "Save the Paychest - Rules for 25mm Colonial Skirmishes" by Patrick Bailey and Michael Pennock, these are rules that have some useful ideas very much worth stealing; "The Dakla River Campaigns - 1878" by Jack Scruby, The campaign is part of his Mafrica master scenario system. In this European troops battle Europeans. Great for campaign ideas; "Model Palm Trees by James Davis, if you need palm trees James offers two pretty easy methods of making trees, very good; and "A Synopsis of the Story of the Senegal Revolt of 1879 by Jack Scruby, again part of his Mafrica campaigns and good for ideas. Of course, these are not the only articles, an announcement from Larry Brom that he has regained control of TSATF and may expand it to include battalion level actions. Sounds good to me. Finally, Russ Lockwood's "Wargame Magazine Review" and I'm glad to see that the Heliograph keeps getting good marks from Russ who I meet several years ago at a Cold Wars. It was nice to see him again at Fall In! But one sentence in his commentary puzzled me "Let me assure you Richard is" is what I'm dying to know fill out the rest of the sentence don't leave us hanging, unless of course it's something we might want to hush up. In that case, I really never met that woman before ... No I'm not obsessed with lead ... I can't help buying books ... well you get the idea. MWAN is full of great articles and as always a great read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! 7. Miniature Wargames, number 188, a good read but nothing colonial. 8. Victorian Military Society, Michael Parker, Fairness, 11 Fennel Close, Cove, Famborough, Hants, GU14 9XD Great Britain. If you don't belong to the Victorian Military Society you should, and tell them the Heliograph sent you. Issue 95 contains five very good articles. My favorite "Russians at the Gates of India: The Defence of India's northern flank" by R.A. Johnson, great stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 9. Barnes and Nobles, 1-800-the-book. I ordered several books from last issues list - With the French Foreign Legion in Syria and Massacre and Retribution: Forgotten Wars of the Nineteenth Century I haven't read either yet but skimming through them they look great. Service was very quick, three days after ordering them. 10. Military History, at your newstand, $3.99. What an outrageous price for this magazine but this issue contains "Journal of Infantry Captain Jacob Kreps" by A.B. Feuer. The article contains two colorized photos, very nice, as are the action photos. Feuer has also written several books about the Spanish-American War so he knows his subject. This contains several great table top ideas. 11. Wargames Illustrated, # 136 this issue starts the "Maximilian Adventure in Mexico" by Richard Clarke some great stuff with a full page of color uniform drawings and a description of Camerone. Read this, use Howard's rules and have a go at it. Also here, is "Warfare in the Age of Exploration, 1855-1876 Some Scenarios for Wargaming 'Darkest Africa"' part two by Chris Peers. This is another great article by Chris. I really like the 'Tembe' "a large building in the shape of a hollow rectangle' that Stanley turned into a fort in 1871. This is great. I may build one of these and write it up for next issue or the one after. This really gets the creative juices flowing. #137 continues this theme "Viva the bull! Kill the bull! Maximilian in Mexico part II" by Richard Clarke with a full page color uniform plate, you can use your FFL Zouaves with Foundry Mexicans and your Egyptian battalions from the 1882 War. Yes that's right, Clarke mentions it and the next article by Paul Jackson "'They were not men. they were lions,' The Strange Tale of the Egyptian invasion of Mexico, 1863-1867." The battalion fought in 48 major engagements, now this is different Mexican versus Egyptians in non-fantasy games, time to pick up some Essex Egyptians and Foundry Mexicans. Great articles. "Warfare in the Age of Exploration, 1855-1876 Some Scenarios for Wargaming 'Darkest Africa"' part three by Chris Peers is another great one, pictures the 'Lady Alice', native boats versus Stanley Wow, and three color photos of a game put on at Partisan 98 by John French and Mark Copplestone. There are also two article on gaming with the new pirates that Foundry is producing with color nags, I made my copy to cut out. Next to build some pirate ships and add Foundry pirates to my collection. 12. Lone Warrior, US- 1707 Ridge Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048. #125 Contains several articles, but nothing colonial, that are all worth reading for great ideas!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! 13. Practical Wargarner, Nexus Media Subscriptions Dept. Tower House Sovereign Park, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9EF UK. I started a sub to this and Regiment in late November but haven't received anything yet. 14. Articles of War LTD., 8806 Bronx Ave., Skokie, IL 60077-1896. 847-674-7445. Lots of good books here. I received an announcement from Bob Ruman that are offering a new book Campaigns on the North- West Frontier, 1851 to 1908 by Captain Hugh L. Neville., DSO, Royal Field Artillery. The announcement says "Originally published in 1912, this is probably the single best one volume account of British campaigns against the tribes along India's North-West Frontier. It covers in detail 27 frontier campaigns from the Black Mountain Expedition of 1852, to the Mohmand Field Force in 1908. Included are such campaigns as the 1863 Ambela campaign; the 1868 Black Mountain; 1877-78 Jowaki Expedition; 1878-79 Zakha Kel Expedition; 1881 Mahsud Expedition; 1888 Black Mountain; 1891 Miranzi Field Force; the 1894-95 Mahsud Expedition; 1895 Chitral Relief Force; the 1897 Uprisings with the operations of the Tochi Malakand, Buner, Tirah, Peshawar and Kurram Field Force's. "In addition to a detailed operational narrative, there are numerous appendices, including lists of regiments with which campaigns they served in amongst others. This work will be especially helpful to British Medal Collectors for its information on these numerous small campaigns. 1999 limited edition reprint of 1912 edition, 6 X 9, 452 pages with 6 photos and 14 maps. "**PRE-PUBLICATION PRICE VALID TO MARCH 29TH, 1999 = $39.95." I have read reviews of the original version, saying that it was very useful for officers in the field who were inexperienced with the NW Frontier tactics and a must read before being sent there. I'm ordering one now, if you order one tell them you heard it from the Heliograph. The flyer also had two web addresses for their books. For used books www.abebooks.com/ I called this up went to military, but didn't find them listed. Then I tried Military with a capital M, but likewise no Art of War. Anyway this site contains about 100 booksellers with military offerings. This is great. Then I went to www.sonic.net/-bstone/articles and searched through Articles of War books. They have tons of colonial books, lots I haven't seen offered before. If you're not on-line give them a call and get their catalog. 15. Osprey their latest catalog indicates that new MAA colonial titles include
325 French Foreign Legion 1914-45 107 British Infantry Equipment 1808-1908, revised 16. Redoubt, in the US from Miniature Service Center, 1525 Bridge Street #163, Yuba City, CA 95993, 530-673-5169. A 15% discount still continues. The latest flyer has something new for the Zulu War range. A Wargamers Painting Guide to the Anglo-Zulu Wars by Richard Mackintosh, with a forward by Ian Knight. A handy reference guide to the fighting and support units of both the British and Zulu armies. Includes lists of the units engaged and description of the dress and weapons for the Zulu Impis and uniforms, facing colors, regimental insignia for both the British and Volunteer forces. Includes black and white drawings and some color photographs. $12.95. 17. Howard Whitehouse, 312 Ridgecrest LaFayette, GA 30728. Howard still has copies of his colonial classic book Battle in Africa for $10. If you don't have one you need it. This is the best of its kind! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Howard also makes some really great scenery modules or whole tables of scenery. I have some small scenery piece Howard makes and they are outstanding, very functional, made to your specifications, good looking, and not that expensive. Give Howard a call. Highly Recommended!! 18. The Journal of Military History, vol. 63 no 1. January 1999. Try your library. Has a great article by Jos6 E. Alvarez "Between Gallipoli and DDay: Alhucemas, 1925. The article details the battles in Spanish Morocco with the Spanish Foreign Legion and the Regulares against Abd-el-Krim, this is great stuff. A whole new area to game, unfortunately no one makes the Spanish Foreign Legion and loyal? Moroccans. 19. BY JINGO http: //members. spree. com/sip/byjingo 20. Savage and Soldier Check this out at
