Frontline Wargaming

25mm Colonial Range Boats

by Richard Brooks

While at Fall In! I purchased two boats from Frontline Wargaming, RLBPS, 4827 Treeview Terrace, Rockford, IL 61109, 815-874-5351. The catalog lists six items for their 25mm Colonial Range:

FC1 African Princess Steam Powered River Boat with Canvas Awning $19.00
    FC2 Dug Out Canoe $4.75
FC3 Circular Tribal Hut with Conical Thatch Roof $9.50
FC4 Thatched Two Room Bungalow Missionary Station $32.50
FC5 Flat Roofed Adobe Dwelling with Side Stairs $25.00
    FC6 Beehive Grass Hut $8.00

The African Princess (FC1) is 8 1/2" x 2 1/4". The flat interior is approximately 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" so there is plenty of room for at least ten figures forward of the steam engine and one or two at the tiller if you leave off the awning. The awning can be either affixed to the gunnels or the deck, much better on the gunnels so you can put figures under it. The engine has a space marked on the deck for its placement, aft near the tiller. This could be a problem if you wanted to place the awning over the rear portion of the boat rather than the mid section. Painted and grunged up this boat will make an excellent addition for Darkest African Adventures.

The Dug Out Canoe (FC2) is 6" x 1 1/4". the flat interior measures 4 1/2" x 3/4" so it should be able to hold five or six natives that are individually based on pennies. Resin is fragile, as I dropped mine from about two feet off the floor and it broke in two. But, not to worry as epoxy or super glue will fix it right up.

Make sure you wash your resin pieces with dish soapy water to remove any manufacturing release agents as you would any figures.

The sculpting and detail are very well done on all their pieces. The African Princess inspired me when I was next in the local railroad hobby shop for paint to purchase a vertical steam engine to try my hand at a small launch. The other RLBPS pieces I saw were all very nicely done. If I were building an African/Near Eastern village I would start with these buildings. Actually I probably will next year in 2000.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
