This issue contains three articles concerning colonial gaming. "Expeditions into Darkest Africa" by Mark Copplestone is his painting guide we have seen before on these pages. "Hell comes to Cow Town - A Wild West Gunfight Scenario" by Walt O'Hara and Dave Markley which uses Ansell's "The Rules With No Name" this also includes "Supplementary Material for The Rules With No Name" and "A Shotgun Firing Template". These three articles are great, so good information and complete info for a scenario with your Wild West figures. Not only were these a good read but contain information that can be used for other battles than just the wild west.

Finally, but certainly not least, is Jack Scruby's "The Dakla River Campaign - 1878". The campaign is part of his Mafrica master scenario system. In this native troops battle Europeans. Great for campaign ideas.

Of course, these are not the only articles, MWAN is full of great articles ans as always a great read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I do know that Dennis has a very nice collection of books and his service is prompt, I have no complaints on my orders. Give him a call to get his catalog. He is also the US distributor for Caliver Books another good service company.

9. Miniature Wargames, number 186 nothing really colonial here. However, it contains one article by Kevin Van Overmeire entitled "Tacambaro: The Belgians in Mexico", part I, this campaign takes place in 1864 at the request of the French. This part contains the OB. Very interesting article with some good ideas to borrow.

Number 187 contains two articles:

"The Second Battle of Ras-Al-Khaimah, December 1819" by Mark Bevis piratical (?) Arabs versus the Brits and Indians. Great ideas.
"With Baldrick to Khartoum, 'I have a cunning plan, my Lord'" 1884/85 Egypt/Sudan border great scenario with OBs and plenty of good info.

15. Books - I believe I have mentioned this before but again - The Exploration of Africa: from Cairo to the Cape by Anne Hugon $12.95 is a great little book full of illustrations (B&W but most in Color) and contains some really good info on explorers and Africa a must read before attempting Darkest Africa gaming at the very least.

Through the Dark Continent, two vols, by Henry M. Stanley, from Dover $11.95 each. You can't help but find great stuff in here for Darkest Africa, see my info article below and John Baxter's great article.

16. Principles of War the magazine issue 7 July 98. from John Hollyoak, The Farrows, Offmore Court, Offmore Farm Close, Kidderminster, DY10 3XJ Great Britain. This issue contains other articles but those of interest to colonials include "19th century Q&A", "Prussian Tactics in 1866 and 1870" by Richard Clarke, "Solo Principles of War" Graham Bryson Solo PoW uses four mechanisms that introduce uncertainty:

    1. The final quality of the units is not known until it goes into action for the first time.
    2. The effect of terain is unknown, until you try to move accross it or use it as cover.
    3. There is a spotting/sighting rule.
    4. There is a die based initiative point system for movement and actions.

"First Schaffenhausen War" by Barry Lovell is a European war campaign in 1871 great ideas, and "The Battle of Montebello 20/5/1859" by Tony Cane. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

17. Wargames Illustrated, #134 contains "Skirmishing Wild West Movies: No. 3 The Wild Bunch" by Ian Barstow a great scenario for Wild West figs and uses "The Rules With No Name".

#135 is a must have issue and nearly every article is colonial in nature. An ad for Foundry Figs contains a color guide to Colonial Indian figs also an ad announcing Ian Heath's Armies of the 19th Century: China $40.00 plus postage see 1 above for ordering. Articles include a Boer war scenario, AK47 rules for 1990 African Warfare, Fire and Fury rules for the Crimean War, building and gaming a Wild West Town, and scenarios for Darkest Africa. These are all must read articles for ideas.

Particularly useful are "Hilton, Colorado" by David Marshall building and gaming a Wild West Town great color phots, map and construction guide!!! And, by Chris Peers "Warfare in the Age of Exploration, 1855 - 1876 Some Scenarios for Wargaming 'Darkest Africa' part one: Two Explorers come to Grief." One scenario involves Burton and Speke while the other involves pygmies and an Arab expedition. Great stuff!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!!!

18. Lone Warrior, US- 1707 Ridge Road, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Contains several articles worth reading: "Solo Campaigns" by Nic Birt, Boer War scenarios. "Solo Spanish-American War: San Juan Hill" by Scott Hansen. "Colonial Baggage Trains" by Chris Grice. These are all worth reading for great ideas!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

19. Practical Wargamer, Nexus Media Subscriptions Dept. Tower House Sovereign Park, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9EF UK. I started a sub to this and Regiment in late November but haven't received anything yet. At Fall In I purchased June/August 1998 nothing colonial and Oct/Dec 1998 a special issue on 19th century warfare. It also contains an article by my British namesake Richard Brooks, way to go. The issue is 19th century but continental so if you're interested in continental wars you need this issue. Also here is an article by Ian Weekley on constructing doors and arches very good!! See editor Stuart Asquith's letter. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

20. La Gloire, An all color miniature wargaming supplement and Old Glory's painted figurine catalogue I got issues 1 to 4 at Fall In while there really isn't anything colonial here they are very useful for painting guides. They also contain articles on Wild West gaming. I hope they soon get a photographer who understands lighting figures so they don't, almost always, come out orange. I also hope the next few issues feature their new colonial line. If you have Old Glory figures this mags for you.

21. Men-At-Arms Series: 301 Boer Wars (1) 1836-1898 , and 303 Boer Wars (2) 1898-1902 by Ian Knight these have been around for a while but I just got them at Fall In. I haven't read them yet, but having read Ian's work before I know they will be informative since I know very little about the Boer Wars. These are full of great photographs and the plates are excellent. These are a must have for the colonial gamer. 309 The Italian Invasion of Abyssinia 1935-36 by David Nicolle, makes you wish there were figs available for this war. All three HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

22. Articles of War Ltd., 8806 Bronx Ave., Skokie, IL 60077-1896. Lots of good books here. I have included a list of books and a colonial reprint survey that you should take the time to check off the books you would like to see reprinted and send back to them, please do so as the more books that are available the better represented our period will become.

23. By Jingo, http://members.spree.com/sip/byjingo I checked this new site out and it's pretty good, I hope they keep it up and running for a long time. I think they need to make a few changes, like getting away from a visual opening that takes two minutes to download and it's nothing but the logo. I know most people like visual stuff, it's easier than reading, but I would rather have the info. I checked out an article on making Congo canoes, useful since I'm in need of some, but there was just a visual which told me to check out the verbal description in the encyclopedia, unfortunately nothing was immediately labelled as such so I went back to the main menu and took a guess and was right. What I found was 12 pages, when printed out of information on constructing buildings, canoes, shields and lots of other useful information. Give this site a try. Recommended! while I find my way about here, I still have only seen a small portion.

24. Savage and Soldier has added more articles, a very nice one on Colonial German Uniforms etc. is currently up. Check this out at www.dnai.com/~soongliu/SavageAndSoldier

Highly Recommend for all especially those of you who have not seen S&S, full of great information.
