Note each boat has two guns on the top deck served by what appears to be both naval and infantry men. The lower deck has some sort of protection amidships above the rail. It could be anything from iron plate to canvas. The lower deck is packed with soldiers. It appears as though La Topaze has a canvas covering over the upper deck.
