The books listed here are the ones I thought worthwhile, but the are many, many others that I have never opened and could be even better. If you are doing research on your own I suggest as a good starting point both the Cosmas and Nofi books as they have very good bibliographies. Several of the following contain OBs that are very useful: Hooker, Nofi, Novak, and Roosevelt in particular. Roosevelt, as listed below, contains the best available collection of photographs for the Rough Riders. In regard to works of art most any edition of the collected works of Frederick Remington will have some excellent scenes. Nofi also has a nice collection of photos and OBs for naval enthusiasts. If I had to choose books for my library concerning the Spanish-American War the most highly recommended books would be, in no particular order: Cosmas, Hooker, Nofi, Novak, and Roosevelt (as listed below). Only the Naval History article as listed would be worth copying or purchasing strictly for the color drawing and the topographic map. For skirmish purposes the Tone article provides some very good insight into Cuban Revolutionary era wounds and should be available in most large libraries. BOOKSAlger, Russell Alexander, The Spanish-American War, 1901. Alger was the Sec of War then.

NOVELSThe following is from "Headquarters Gazette", Society for Military History, Spring 1998 issue. "The editor wonders if Elmore Leonard, the popular crime mystery writer, used the Cosmas book as a source for his new novel set during the Spanish-American War in 1898, Cuba Libre published by Delacorte. The entertaining novel about an American cowboy running guns to Cuba on the eve of the war involves a beautiful woman, Cuban revolutionaries, the cruel Guadia Civil...and some descriptions of naval and land battles." page 6.
