Russia in Central Asia

(Part 2)

by Richard Brooks

Part 1: Russia in Asia (in Heliograph #102)

While this is the last part of the Russian conquest of Central Asia it probably contains the best quotes from Mac Gahan's book. Only two non-Russians accompanied the expedition to conquer Khiva, Mac Gahan and a German infantry office. For gamers Mac Gahan's version is great. Not only does the book read well and quickly, he provides OB material and sufficient other detail to write special rules to recreate the general campaign.

There is too much great material to list here and it would be a waste of space. Just read the material starting on the next page. You will be amazed at how many ideas for campaign and punative expeditions you will come up with.

Bryan Ansell sent along a pile of drawings by Ian Heath for an up coming book to be published by The Foundry. Eighteen pages of four sections with each section containing three to five drawings of Asian troops, weapons and extra head detail. I'm not sure that this is the entire collection, even if it is this is worth more than a pile of Ospreys. Bryan graciously allowed me to choose one section to show you what Ian Heath is putting together.

In concert with the current topic of Russia in asia, I chose the section containing what appears to be Khivians. I could be wrong, but they are definately from Central Asia. Thank you Bryan and Ian these are great drawings, great detail and wonderful animation.
