Keith Frye: The Cossack Uniform information is on the next page. THANK YOU KEITH
Joseph Seliga: I am happy that you are continuing to publish the Heliograph. I enjoy the information that you are able to locate and publish. I too am dismayed that I have yet to receive an issue of the Savage and Soldier from the new publisher.
Thanks for the complements from you and others that wrote in saying thanks with their renewals. I have no new information concerning S&S.
Bryan Ansell, The Foundry: Wargames Illustrated is alive and well, I don't think that there's any doubt it will continue: Duncan has it all set up on a sound financial basis. I have the May issue on my desk here: it came out a couple of weeks ago. Duncan does take US subs direct. If any of your readers can't get hold of a Sterling cheque, we'd be happy to take their subs, in $s, convert it and pass it on. The surface rate is £32, airmail £42.
Thank you for the info and the subscription service this one time. Figure that a pound is approximately $1.70. This comes out to $54.40 surface and $71.40 airmail.
Ian Knight, Mahaweni@compuserve.com: I received the latest copy of the Heliograph this morning. I've been moved to drop you a line in the past, but usually give up before I make the effort to put pen to paper! However, since I've just got connected to the internet, and this is my toy this week, I thought - what the hell!
My main comment concerns Wargames Illustrated. Sorry, but the problems are definately on your side of the pond: it has been coming out much as usual over here and, indeed, I was browsing through the May issue in my local newsagents only this morning.
Regarding COLONIAL CONQUEST. My apologies for its eratic appearence. There are a number of reasons for this, chiefly that it's quite difficult for me to fill each issue. I have to fit it in around other work and, when I finally do produce a copy. Dave Ryan has to find time to fit it into his publishing schedule! The magazine is not so much defunct as re-packaged; neither Dave nor I have been happy with the title Colonial Conquest - which we inherited - and AGE OF EMPIRES just broadens the parameters slightly. Otherwise it'll be much the same; and probably just as eratic! Sorry!
Good luck on AGE of EMPIRES Ian. I certainly did not mean to cast blame on Ian for its eratic appearence, I have an appreciation for the troubles of fill each issue. As to Wargames Illustrated we seem to have found the problem about the same time that Ian and Bryan told us it was over here. Going directly to the publisher for subscriptions is the best way to handle it rather than hit or mostly miss with hobby shop subscriptions.
Henry Rones: Re Savage and Soldier has anyone yet gone to the Post Master Inspector General? It's not the difference between making a rent payment or eating, but the $20 is money not otherwise available for hobby spending! Re movie listings in Heliograph--please cease these. I'd rather see space devoted to gaming, rules variants, products, books and magazine reviews. What happened to the rest of your article on the German colonials?
There wouldn't be any more movie lists and space is going to more gaming stuff. As to the German Colonials I am still working on it, and it will be ready in the October or December issue.
Chris Nelson: Received some sad news in todays (May 16th) mail, on May 11 one of the Giants of American wargaming and a friend of many years Fred H. Vietmeyer passed away. Fred was an expert on Napoleonics and knowledgeable on WWII and had a knowledge regarding Imperial Germany's Colonial wars in Southeast Africa. (his grandfather served in the Kaiser's Colonial Army). Fred will be sorely missed.
Chris also discussed some problems he was having with Wargames Inc. over Wargames Illustrated, which was cleared up. They will not be carrying it. Chris then wrote to WI in the UK but I have not heard about a response yet. But assume that Duncan will accept direct subscriptions.
I have heard that some people will be dropping their subscription (to the Heliograph) because it's on the internet. So don't be surprised if some subscribers don't renew.
I think that has already happened.
As well as picking up new subscribers...--RL
Ron Lizorty: I picked up issue #182 of Strategy and Tactics at a Border's Bookstore recently and they did a big article on the Sudan (with plans to eventually do a boardgame). Don't know if this was mentioned previously in the Heliograph...
I had not seen that issue yet, thanks for the heads up. Nobody near here carries S&T. A special thanks to you Ron for the great work you have put into the title figures. I really appreciate it.
Patrick Wilson: I keep meaning to send you some projects and work done locally of interest to your readers; and I promise I will. Keep up the excellent effort and improving quality of the Heliograph! I share your unbounded enthusiasm for the work of Guernsey Foundry! Bryan Ansell is still expecting to publish our rules, John Company, this year.
I hope that you will send us something soon to print. Thanks Patrick.
