For those of you who read the credits under the table of contents, you already know that a new name has appeared in the editorial listings. For those who did not, you are now finding this out. Mr. Renner is disappearing into the University of Illinois campus in pursuit of further education. GDW and The Grenadier would like to take this opportunity to wish him the best of luck and to add a warm thanks for the excellent job he did for the magazine and the Workshop. His leaving created a need for a replacement editor for The Grenadier; I volunteered to assume that responsibility in addition to my duties as a game developer. While the editors may have changed, the philosophy guiding the magazine has not. The Grenadier will continue to maintain Mr. Renner's policy of constant improvement in all areas. The present goal is to become the foremost magazine covering the world of wargaming. Undoubtedly there will be differences in the way things are done. To outline the basis of future planning, I have several items to mention. The foremost is that I feel future physical improvements should be financed by the increase in subscribers rather than by price increases. As subscriptions grow, the economies of scale will naturally allow further improvements physically. As to content, I seek to change sightly the mixture of articles. I would prefer to print a higher proportion of articles on scenarios and game strategies and tactics. Game reviews will be a little less emphasized, but I seek to increase their depth of coverage. In the area of science fiction, The Grenadier is not going to leave the entire area to that new arrival from Illinois, The Journal. There will still appear occasional articles on science fiction, and I will, from time to time, mention what I see as important events in this field. One unchanging area of The Grenadier is the constant need for articles. Many of the articles are written by the subscribers. If you can write well on one or more of the below categories, you might find an outlet for your talents in the pages of The Grenadier. Any article of interest on the subject of wargaming is acceptable; however, there are a few basic categories in which The Grenadier is especially interested in: Game Reviews Articles of this type should be in depth analysis of some product on the market. Well-reasoned opinions, accurate criticisms, and detailed appreciation of play dynamics are all aspects of good reviews (please note what Mr. Vasey has to say about the subject in the guest editorial). Shallow descriptions or quick "first impressions" are not what is needed. Strategy and Tactics How to play the game is of at least equal interest as what the game is about. Articles of this nature are acceptable on any published wargame, especially, due to the nature of the readership, on GDW games. Scenarios New scenarios for a published game increase the enjoyment that can be derived out of the game. Scenarios should be well thought out, with accurate orders of battle and appearance. As above, scenarios for GDW games are of particular interest. Military History There are two types of military history, that which relates historical information to a wargame and that which does not. The Grenadier is interested only in the first category. The best example of this type of article can be found in this issue; please see Frank Prieskop's article on the Yugoslav Army. Unofficial The Unofficial column has resurfaced as part of the Europa Notes column. Unofficial is a clearinghouse for rules variants and new ideas for Europa games. Submissions for this column should be quite short, only 700 words at most. All submissions must be typed, double-spaced, with generous margins. A cover page with the author's name, address, and phone number, along with the suggested title of the article, should be included. Contributions to Unofficial should observe the article lengths mentioned above; other articles should be no less than 6 pages nor more than 25 pages in length. All submissions become the property of The Grenadier. In sending an article to The Grenadier, the author confirms that the article is not copyrighted, has not been previously published, and is not being submitted simultaneously to another publisher. The current rate of payment per printed page is $5.00 in cash or $10.00 in GDW products. Contributions to Unofficial can not be acknowledged or paid for. Rejected articles will be returned to the author only if a sufficiently large envelope (to fit the article) and sufficient postage (to mail the article) are included. It is strongly recommended that the author keep a photocopy of his submitted articles. The Grenadier can not be responsible for manuscripts not specifically solicited. Note: The Grenadier is no longer being published.--RL Back to Grenadier Number 7 Table of Contents Back to Grenadier List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 2001 by Pacific Rim Publishing This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
