by Marc Miller

Many but not necessarily all of these games will be reviewed in later issues Of The Grenadier.

Rommel & Tunisia by Operational Studies Group (1261 Broadway, NY, NY 10001) A simulation of the 1942-43 campaign in North Africa that culminated in the destruction of Panzerarmee Afrika. Several scenarios cover all the actions, from the early company/ battalion level engagements to the eventual battles between armies. The rules cover air units, supply, leaders and command control, and weather. Boxed, with two maps and 600 counters. $18-00

Le Grand Empire, by Simulations Canada (POB 221, Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, Canada BON IMO). This game covers the wars of Napoleon, from the early campaigns in Italy to the eventual end at Waterloo. All military units in the game are represented as identical fleets and armies. The basic game is a two-player version, with rules covering the neutral countries; there are also rules for a multi-player version. Special rules cover the command expertise of Napoleon and Nelson. One 22x28 map, 255 counters. $9.75

Quebec Libre, by Simulations Canada. A political /economic game covering Canada in the near future. Each player takes one of the provinces and attempts to improve its standard of living. A special rule allows the Quebec player to secede from the national government. A rather extensive table of random events adds uncertainty to the game. One map (area movement, no hex grid), 255 counters. $9.75

Salerno: Operation Avalanche, by West End Games (POB 156, Cedarhurst, NY 11516). Simulates the Allied invasion of Italy at Salerno in 1943. The Allied units (British and American) are represented as brigades/regiments, while the German units are mostly battalion-sized. The game has three scenarios, covering the invasion, the inland battle, and the entire campaign. One 22x16 map, 108 counters (large size, on heavy cardboard). $8.00

The Great War, by West End Games. This game is a strategic-level, areamovement simulation of the first World War. Most units are corps or armies; naval units are fleets. Special rules cover the involvement of neutrals, including the United States. Several scenarios, two-player and multi-player options. One map, 200 counters. $12.00. (This game was originally published by Morningside/Rand).

Sharpsburg, by Command Perspectives (935 Chalcedony St., San Diego, CA 92109). A regimental-level simulation of the Civil War battle of the same name. Each hex is 100 yards, each turn is 15 minutes. The artwork in this game is not up to professional standards, but it looks like they might have something in the rules. One map, over 1000 counters. $16.00

Napoleon at Leipzig, by Operational Studies Group. A brigade-level simulation of the "Battle of Nations" at Leipzig in 1813. The rules are presented in three modules, of increasing complexity. As the modules become more complex, more attention is paid to problems of command control. The artwork is good, especially the maps; the counters are marred by an attempt to superimpose corps designations over the entire counter. Boxed, two maps, 400 counters $18.00.
