Perhaps every cloud does have a silver lining. While failing behind the publishing schedule for The Grenadier is not a good idea (see this issue's "Editorial Notes"), it did allow me to reserve some space for a last-minute insertion of news from this year's Origins convention - the winners of the various awards:

Game Designers Guild Select Awards

Each year, the Game Designers Guild, a professional organization of game designers, selects the five games that the members believe are outstanding design efforts of the previous year. They are:

    Bloodtree Rebellion by Lynn Willis
    Double Star by Marc W. Miller
    Korsun Pocket by Jack Radey
    Road to the Rhine by Frank Chadwick
    White Death by Frank Chadwick

H.G. Wells Awards

The H.G. Wells Awards winners are chosen by popular vote by the attendees of the convention. The awards are given to the best miniature and role- playing releases of the previous year (or all-time best, in two cases). The winners are:

    Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Figure Series Ral Partha Collectables
    Best Vehicular Model Series Martian Metals Ogre Series
    Best Miniature Rules GDW System 7 Napoleonics

    Best Professional Magazine Covering Miniatures The Courier
    Best Professional Magazine Covering Role-Playing Journal of the TAS
    All-Time Best 20th Century Naval Rules Brookhurst Hobbies General Quarters
    All-Time Best Ancient/Medieval Land Rules FGU Chivalry & Sorcery

Charles Roberts Awards

The Charles Roberts Awards winners are chosen by popular vote by the attendees of the convention. The awards are given to the best boardgame releases of the previous year. The winners are:

    Best Pre-20th Century Boardgame OSG Napoleon at Leipzig
    Best 20th Century Boardgame SPI Cityfight
    Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Boardgame ...SP I Creature That Ate Sheboygan
    Best Initial Release of a Boardgame Y aquinto Ironclads
    Best Profession Magazine Covering Boardgames Fire & Movement
    Best Amateur Magazine in General Perfidious Albion
