Editorial Notes

Origins

John M. Astell

If it seems to you that this issue of The Grenadier is somewhat schizophrenic, you may be right. The publishing schedule called for this issue to visit the printers while I, together with the rest of the GDW staff, attended the Origins convention. However, I was unexpectedly given development/rules editing projects for Prague and Azhanti High Lightning. These projects preempted the time set aside for The Grenadier, with the result that the issue would not be ready to go to the printers as scheduled. Once that was realized, I set aside a couple blocks of space so that I could insert any special news or announcements from Origins upon my return from Origins. With the majority of the work on the issue being done before Origins and the remainder after the convention, I am concerned that this will give the issue a split personality in terms of style and the like.

Origins has affected this issue in two other areas as well. First, the "My Two Cents" column will not be appearing in this issue as Frank's duties left him insufficient time to write the column before Origins. The column will return in issue 11. Secondly, Fall of France will not be released as scheduled.

When Origins was moved from mid-July to late June, this cut crucial design and development time from the schedule. Fall of France required the most time in this regards and thus became the victim. Unfortunately, I had scheduled an article connected with Fall of France to appear simultaneously in print with the game's release. It was too late (besides being unfair to the author) to pull the article from this issue, thus Karl Wiegers' article on the French Navy will appear in print before Fall of France itself does.

With the bad news out of the way, it is time for some good news. For those of you with writing talents, now is the time to cash in. The Grenadier's rates for authors has been raised, starting with next issue, to the following:

$7.50 in cash per printed page or
$15.00 in GDW products per printed page. (As before, contributions to "Unofficial" can not be acknowledged or paid for.)

Since I'm already on the subject of article submissions, I might as well give the rest of the standard pitch here:

Many of the articles appearing in The Grenadier are written by the readers. If you can write well on one or more of the below categories, you might find an outlet for your talents in the pages of The Grenadier. Any article of interest on the subject of wargaming is acceptable, and the categories of special interest are listed below.

Game Reviews An articles of this type should be an in-depth analysis of some product on the market. Well reasoned opinions, correct criticisms of accuracy, and detailed appreciation of play dynamics are all aspects of good reviews. Shallow descriptions or quick "first impressions" are not what is needed.

Strategy and Tactics. How to play the game is at least as important as what the game is about. Articles of this type on any published wargame are acceptable, but, due to the nature of the readership, strategy/tactics articles on GDW games are especially welcome.

Scenarios. New scenarios for a published game increase the enjoyment that can be derived from that game. Scenarios should be well thought-out, with accurate information. Especially popular are new scenarios for Europa games.

Military History. There are two types of military history articles: those that relate historical information to a wargame and those that do not. The Grenadier is only interested in the first category.

Unofficial. This is a column featuring rules variants and new ideas for GDW games (and Europa in particular). Submissions for this column should be quite short, only 700 words at most.

All submissions must be typed, double- spaced, with generous margins. A cover page with author's name, address, and phone number, along with the suggested title of the article, should be included. Other than contributions to "Unofficial", articles should be no less than 6 pages nor more than 25 in length.

In sending an article to The Grenadier, the author confirms that the article is not copyrighted, has not been previously published, and is not being submitted simultaneously to another publisher. Rejected articles will be returned to the author only if a sufficiently large envelop (to fit the article) and sufficient postage (to mail the article) are included. It is strongly recommended that the author keep a photocopy of his submitted articles. The Grenadier can not be responsible for manuscripts not specifically solicited.

Note: The Grenadier is no longer being published--RL
