The Grenadier, alias the Paper Soldier, is our new and enlarged version of the Europa Newsletter. The name change, which undoubtedly took many of you by surprise, is the result of a few last-minute discussions and arguments. Basically, we decided that a title like the Paper Soldier was not suitable for the type of magazine we plan to produce. The Grenadier, on the other hand, reflects our serious approach to wargaming subjects. Furthermore, the name change solved a few production problems that were bothering us. With all of these factors behind it, the new title could hardly fail. In fact, the magazine staff unanimously voted for the change. The new title is now officially The Grenadier. In this issue, we have several items of interest. One of these is not even in the magazine - it's on the tear-off mailing cover. The Workshop is offering a special discount to subscribers of The Grenadier; in this issue the discount amounts to $1 off of any order. There are a few restrictions, but such details are given on the cover sheet itself. We think you will find some of the articles inside even more interesting than the subscriber discount. The lead article is an in-depth analysis of the Polish Armed Forces in 1939, by Franklyn Prieskop. This article contains a brief history of the Polish Army, with descriptions of the various service branches at the time of the invasions, and a complete order of battle of the various army organizations. Old subscribers of the Newsletter will recall his two similar articles on Italy and Slovakia. Frank Chadwick, designer here at GDW, has written an article on the history of the tank. The first part of his article appears in this issue; the remaining part will be published in April. For the Europa series fans, we have a Drang Nach Osten/Unentschieden scenario by John Gordon, covering the second half of the Eastern Front campaign. Through the use of this scenario one can play most of Unentschieden without first playing an entire DNO game. In addition to these articles, we have our usual assortment of regular columns and special items. In the next few issues of The Grenadier, we plan to widen the scope of the magazine even further, covering some of the items we missed in this issue. Since many of our articles come from our subscribers, the actual material published will depend to a large degree on what we receive for publication. We encourage our readers to write on any subject they feel familiar with. Guidelines for prospective authors are listed later in the magazine. I would like to apologize to the subscribers of the Europa Newsletter for the deadline date of the contest in the third issue. Since the Newsletter was mailed third class, some subscribers received their copies later than we had anticipated. In fact, some people received their copies after the deadline date for the contest. Naturally, we received no end of complaints on this matter. Some readers explained their situation and sent in their entry anyway; others merely griped about how they would have sent in an entry if it wasn't for the deadline date. To be fair, we merely waited until the entries stopped coming in before we evaluated them (an unnecessary gesture, as it turned out, since the best response was one of the first). Needless to say, we are taking steps to make sure that no one is shut out of the contest because his magazine comes late. Finally, a few words about reader input seem appropriate here. It seems that most wargaming magazines now have some form of "feedback" cards for evaluating reader response. While we are not ruling out this possibility for the future, at present The Grenadier will depend on letters from its readers for its reader input. We are considering a column of letters from the subscribers, where readers can have an opportunity to criticize an article or make some comment about some new idea or concept in wargaming. Implementation of this idea will depend on the number and quality of the letters we receive. If you ever wanted to say something important about wargaming, now's your big chance.
