Total retail bookstore sales in the USA have now been announced – $13,500,000,000 (roughly £8,400,000,000) in the year to 31 January. Of this, 45% was through the two major chains of Barnes & Noble and Borders. Barnes & Noble sold books to the value of $3,250,000,000 through its 942 stores, and Borders sold $3,000,000,000 worth through 1,204. Amazon.com were the third largest retail bookseller with sales of $800,000,000, nearly 6% of the total (or 13% of the two chains).
