Combined Publishing and Sarpedon

by Lionel Leventhal

In the United States Combined Publishing have taken over Sarpedon. Greenhill are of course the international distributors for Combined, but also have worked on joint book projects with Sarpedon.

Over the past three years Combined Publishing have achieved a significant position in publishing and distributing military history books in the United States. Founded by Bob Pigeon as a production services company in the 1980s, Combined moved into independent military publishing in the early 1990s and a major expansion strategy was adopted in 1996 when David Farnsworth (from Greenhill Books) joined them. The major expansion took the form of a two-pronged programme of growth: an expanded publishing programme and the introduction to the US market of books from military publishers in Britain and the Continent, such as Pen & Sword Books and Histoire et Collections.

Sarpedon Publishers, in its 9 years as an independent imprint, have developed an enviable reputation for military history books and Steve Smith will remain with the company as Publisher of Sarpedon Publishers. Books will continue to be published under both imprints, and Steve Smith will retain the editorial offices of Sarpedon Publishers in Rockville Centre, New York.

"This is an extremely exciting development for us here at Combined Publishing," said Mr Bob Pigeon "and we welcome Sarpedon Publishers into the fold."
