The Art of War of Revolutionary France by Paddy Griffith has won an American military book award. The award is presented every year by the New York Military Affairs Symposium, for the 'best new work in military history' and that for 1998 has been awarded to Paddy Griffith's The Art of War of Revolutionary France. Previous award winners for the last five years have been:
1996 – David Glantz and Jonathan M. House, When Titans Clash: How the Red Army Stopped Hitler. 1995 – John Prados, Combined Fleet Decoded: The Secret History of American Intelligence and the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II. 1994 – Michael D. Doubler, Closing with the Enemy: How GIs Fought the War in Europe, 1944–1945. 1993 – Jeffry D. Wert, General James Longstreet: The Confederacy's Most Controversial Soldier. The New York Military Affairs Symposium grew out of a series of informal seminars that had been held for several years by university students and professors at the Graduate Center for the City University of New York during the 1970s. In 1980 NYMAS was chartered by the State of New York as a not-for-profit education corporation. Since its creation, NYMAS has sponsored hundreds of lectures on a variety of subjects in military history, defence policy, and related matters, such as military sociology and anthropology. Some of the most distinguished scholars in the field have honoured NYMAS by their presence, among them Sir Michael Howard and John Keegan. In addition, NYMAS has sponsored one or two scholarly conferences each year, and held occasional special events. The Art of War of Revolutionary France continues to receive reviews, the latest of which is: 'Readers familiar with his work expect Griffith to be informative, entertaining, and outrageous, and his latest product meets these expectations ... Griffith writes with great flare, and this latest volume demands attention from those concerned with the field.' – The International History Review.
