Proctor Patterson Jones, a prominent and singularly unique figure on the San Francisco scene for over four decades, died last month. Born in 1916, he began his professional career writing law. He subsequently worked as a photographer, filmmaker and author, and established the Proctor Jones Publishing company in San Francisco. Mr Jones had a life-long fascination with France and her history, particularly the life of Napoleon. His work, Napoleon: An Intimate History received the 1992 Literary Award of the Napoleonic Society. He was the Honorary President of the Napoleonic Alliance, and his love of France, her history, land and people, lives on in his photographs, books, and the support he gave such institutions as Giverny, Versailles, the Vieilles Maisons, and Malmaison. We understand that Proctor Jones had advanced with two further books for publication, following the success of his Napoleon: How he did It and In Napoleon's Shadow, and hope that publication of these will be able to proceed.
