New figures released in the United States show the growth of the superstore. Last year the number of stores for the main chains grew by 17%:
Borders from 157 in 1996 to 203 in 1997 Books-a-Million from 91 in 1996 to 107 in 1997 Crown from 109 in 1996 to 131 in 1997 The sales of the two main chains also grew: Barnes & Noble from $1,861 billion (£ 1,163million) in 1996 grew by 21% to $2,246,000,000 (£ 140,375,000) in 1997. Borders grew from $958,100,000 (£ 59,881,250) in 1996 grew by 32% to $1,264 billion (£ 790,062 million) in 1997. In the first quarter of 1998 the growth continued, and Barnes & Noble's sales grew by 12% and Borders' by 18%.
