The latest issue of First Empire has two long and detailed
reviews of Peter Hofschroer's book.
To quote from the first, by John Cook:
'His sources are impeccable and he does not exempt the Prussians
from either criticism or blame ... in order to conclude that
Wellington deliberately misled Blucher, it is necessary to show
motivation, means, will, and opportunity. This, in my view,
Hofschroer does ... Maps are excellent ... There is, however, a
lot more to this book than merely the case against Wellington.
It is a new general history of the events leading up to the
Hundred Days, which includes a seam of material that has not been
mined before in English, and a detailed examination of military
operations, at all levels of command immediately before and
during the campaign. Regardless of what one might think of
Hofschroer's views about Wellington, this book has far more to
offer than that single strand. It is a unique and valuable
addition to the Waterloo library.'
The second review is by Neil Carey, who writes:
'This is certainly one of the more important and controversial
works in this well-exposed field since William Siborne went to
print in 1844. ... his mission is to apply a painstaking
corrective to the traditional Anglocentric interpretation of the
events of 14th to 16th June, and in this he succeeds
admirably.... excellent research ... This meticulous,
informative work ... This is an important book for the Waterloo
enthusiast. Hofschroer has done a great service in mining the
rich seam of German texts for the English reader.'
The editor Richard Partridge reviews Peter Hofschroer's book in
The Age of Napoleon saying:
'I found the book to be very impressive, well written, with
theories backed up with compelling evidence. Whether you agree
with some of his points, or even if you are not particularly
interested in the German States, it should be in your Waterloo
library. I am looking forward to Peter's second volume.'
