What the Critics Say

Review Excerpts
of Greenhill Books

"Greenhill Books have rescued from obscurity this rare classic; arguably the most authoritative, comprehensive and balanced work on the subject in the English language ... The production of this series is admirable: clearly printed and well bound."

    - From an extensive review article by Lt.-Col. R. E. R. Robinson reviewing A History of the Peninsular War by Sir Charles Oman in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research.

"This is a marvellous book ... it is a good read, even for a specialist in the field, who may not be familiar with all the monuments - and their histories - and can enjoy the illustrations and anecdotes ... I applaud the efforts of Uffindell and Corum. They have given us a book which is scholarly enough, thorough' useful, and very entertaining."

    - Owen Connelly in the International History Review reviewing On The Fields of Glory, by Andrew Uffindell and Michael Corum.

'An excellent addition to the invaluable Napoleonic Library of reprints."

    - RUSI Journal reviewing The Memoirs of Baron von Muffling, A Prussian Officer in the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleonic Library).

Danny S. Parker has sought out and transcribed a number of key documents, each of which he introduces but only light edits, giving the reader both a context for, and ~n insight into, the authentic voice of the general involved ... a good read, well worth the money."

    - John Pimlott in Military Illustrated reviewing Hitler's Ardennes Offensive by Danny S. Parker.

'This small but excellent volume ... many good photographs ... well worth reading."

-Max Sarche in Gun Mart reviewing Over There! (G.l. Series).

'Fascinating material with endless wargaming possibilities and potential most highly recommended."

    - Practical Wargaming reviewing For Want of a Nail by Robert Sobel.

'Photographs that have not been seen before .. [The Luftwaffe at War Series] ought to do well, especially with such expert and established authors."

    - Bill Gunston in Air International reviewing the two books by Manfred Griehl in the Luftwaffe At War Series.

'Exciting."

    - Military Model Craft International reviewing Skorzeny's Special Missions

"Highly regarded biography ... gives a clear insight into the mind and motives of the father of modern tank warfare."

    - Military Model Craft International reviewing Guderian: Panzer General by Kenneth Macksey.

"The Anatomy of Glory is a monumental work which must surely be regarded as essential reading by those with an interest in this most elite of all French units as well as students of the period in general ... A wealth of contemporary prints ... The narrative is 'alive' with numerous extracts and quotations which are used to very good effect. The section that deals with Waterloo is particularly descriptive. The Anotomy of Glory is both informative and entertaining, a work of unquestionable quality and a monumental contribution to Napoleonic literature"

    - John S. White reviewing The Anatomy of Glory for Waterloo Journal.

"Unique ... a book which is difficult to put down."

    - Major General C H van Zyl reviewing Go to Your God like a Soldier by lan Knight in the Journal of the Royal Artillery Association.

"John Cross was not only a good man but a good officer and soldier ... he was outstanding in his chosen speciality ... a career of interest, excitement, fulfilment, achievement and influence which many of those who chose to pursue a more orthodox career might well envy. This well-wrinen book provides a fascinating insight into jungle warfare by one of its most experienced exponents. As a personal account of a highly individual career and as a record of the wider political background it has much to recommend it."

    - Major K. G. F. Dann reviewing A Face Like A Chicken's Backside by John Cross in the Journal of the Royal Artillery Association.

"Fascinating insights."

    - Soldier reviewing Skorzeny's Special Missions.

"Well illustrated stories of extreme bravery in the face of battle."

    - Soldier reviewing Heroes of World War II by Robin Cross.

"Whilst reviewing this book I found myself constantly comparing it to a similar publication by Jane's. In comparison this book is a less glossy publication and more of a pure reference work thus making it less readable. However this work has the advantage of two areas. Firstly the author has compiled a comprehensive introduction which covers the development and political impact of battleship construction and secondly there are a large number of rare and very interesting photographs. Although this is not a cheap work I would recommend it to anyone looking for an up to date reference book on battleships."

    - Warship World reviewing Battleships of the World by Rene Greger.
