Last month the annual Napoleonic Fair was the eleventh to be held, but the first to be organised by its new management following taking it over from Greenhill Books. There were several changes, the most significant being to transfer it from Central London to St Albans, which is about twenty-five miles north-west of London. This made it easier for many people to get to the Napoleonic Fair from the Midlands and the North, but unfortunately deterred those who visited from the Continent and used to make a day trip on Eurostar. Greenhill exhibited, of course, and used the event to launch Letters from the Battle of Waterloo, edited by Gareth Glover (who was present at the event), and 1815: The Waterloo Campaign – The German Victory by Peter Hofschroer in paperback (who was also present and gave a lecture to launch his new Wellington’s Smallest Victory from Faber & Faber). Bernard Cornwell was the star lecturer, to coincide with the publication of his latest bestseller. There were five war games (more than before) and a generally very busy atmosphere. Special guests included David G. Chandler and John Hughes Wilson. Exhibitors included Dave Watkins of First Empire and Richard and Roz Brown of Ken Trotman, and there were more stands for re-enactor groups.
