Alternate History 1941

The Moscow Option

by Lionel Levanthal

The latest thought-provoking ‘alternate history’ to be published by Greenhill looks at the whole of the Second World War from a new angle - what might have happened had the Germans taken Moscow in 1941. This is The Moscow Option: An Alternative Second World War by David Downing. Based on authentic history and real possibilities, this unique speculative full-length narrative plays out the dramatic consequences of opportunities taken and examines the grotesque possibilities of a Third Reich triumphant.

On 30 September 1941, the Germans fight their way into the ruins of Moscow and the Soviet Union collapses. Although Russian resistance continues, German ambition multiplies after this signal success and offensives are launched in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Hitler’s armies, assured of victory, make their leader’s dreams reality and Allied hopes of recovery seem to be almost hopelessly doomed.

David Downing convincingly blends actual history with the stimulating world of alternate events. The Moscow Option is a chilling reminder that history might easily have been very different. Like all the Greenhill alternate histories, The Moscow Option is presented as, and reads like, non-fiction.

Other books by David Downing include The Devil’s Virtuosos: German Generals at War, 1939-45.

The Moscow Option was first published in 1979, has been long out of print and has now been revised and republished to join the distinguished list of alternate histories from Greenhill. These include:

Disaster at D-Day by Peter G. Tsouras
The Hitler Options edited by Kenneth Macksey
Rising Sun Victorious edited by Peter G. Tsouras
The Napoleon Options edited by Jonathan North
