The latest addition to the Luftwaffe At War series is The Luftwaffe Over Finland. The new book is by Finnish aviation expert Kari Stenman, and depicts the Germans’ use of aircraft in Finland and Norway. As the base of key operations against the Soviet Union in 1941-4, the Northern Front posed an extreme climatic test to Luftwaffe aircraft, with freezing conditions during the winter months reverting to dry, dusty terrain at the height of summer. Primarily under the control of Luftflotte 1 and 5, Finnish aviation played a critical role in World War II. Kari Stenman outlines the key assignments of fighter, bomber and reconnaissance units throughout the Winter War, detailing their contribution to Barbarossa and the early advances by German and Finnish armies, through to later defensive missions against Soviet night attacks and Allied convoys in the Arctic Sea and North Atlantic. Finland eventually reached a truce with the Soviet Union in September 1944, and had virtually driven out the German troops by the end of that year. Featuring 18 colour photographs and more than 100 black-and-white images, atmospherically shot over the ever-changing Arctic landscape, Kari Stenman profiles the aircraft - and aces - who dominated the Northern Front after 1940. Luftwaffe Over Finland is the eighteenth title in the Luftwaffe At War series.
