Michael Hargreave Mawson, editor of Eyewitness In The Crimea, the collection of Crimean War letters by officer and ADC George Frederick Dallas, has certainly been busy of late. Since the book’s publication in the spring, Mike has appeared in local and national media to promote his great-great grandfather’s vivid and entertaining account of this most mismanaged of military campaigns. A double-page article appeared in Mensa magazine, an organisation to which Mike Mawson has belonged for a number of years. The article credits Dallas with revealing the real story of the ‘first modern war’, and goes on to discuss Mr Mawson’s experiences when researching his ancestor’s portrait of life on the front line. There have also been appearances on BBC Three Counties Radio, Radio 4’s ‘Making History’ programme, an article in the Bedfordshire Times and Citizen, a book signing at the Bedford branch of Waterstones and - with great personal satisfaction to Mr Mawson - a message of acclaim from the Marquess of Anglesey, the author of A History of the British Cavalry, 1816-1919. Lord Anglesey stated, after reading the book: ‘If anyone thinks that there is nothing more to be written about that fascinating Crimean War, he has another think coming. Eyewitness In The Crimea proves the point. Dallas’s letters ... give the reader a real feeling of being there. I cannot recommend the book too highly.’ After two months spent generating exposure for his book, Mike Mawson was one of the guest speakers on a cruise ship in the Black Sea and which visited the Crimea. He took a quantity of books with him, sold them all and took orders for more.
