Rising Sun Victorious

Autographing Event

by Lionel Leventhal

Eight of the contributors to Rising Sun Victorious (plus Lionel Leventhal) gathered in Washington DC for the American launch of this book. On the Memorial Day holiday, the last Monday in May, the multi-contributor autographing event was held in the Union Station shopping complex in downtown DC, in the large, attractive B. Dalton bookstore.

There can have been few autographing events to successfully bring together so many contributors to one volume, and visitors and passers-by were fascinated, especially as Memorial Day is held to commemorate Americans killed in the service of their country, and is a vacation day. The long weekend also saw the launch of the latest movie blockbuster ‘Pearl Harbor’, about the Pacific War.* A number of the passers-by were veterans of World War Two, or were the family of veterans, or were involved in the military today, and this engendered a number of conversations with the contributors to the book. All 75 copies of Rising Sun Victorious that had been sent for the event, which was organized by Stackpole Books who distribute Rising Sun Victorious in the United States, were sold.

*(Footnote; although film critics were negative, the figures for the first weekend of release of ‘Pearl Harbor’ in the United States made it the second highest revenue-earning film for the Memorial Day weekend, after ‘Jurassic Park’).
