Jack McKeown, CEO of the Perseus Books Group, is second right and John Radziewicz, Publisher of Da Capo, is second left. Combined Publishing, one of America’s leading publishers of military history, is to join the Perseus Books Group. The announcement that an agreement for Perseus to acquire Combined had been made was made at BookExpo America, in Chicago, at the beginning of June, and the acquisition is expected to be completed shortly. Combined will be integrated into the publishing programme of Da Capo Press, which has been part of Perseus since 1999. Robert L. Pigeon, the president of Combined, will join Da Capo as a Senior Editor. Of Combined’s military history and general history programme, John Radziewicz, Publisher of Da Capo Press, said: “Over the past decade, Bob Pigeon and Combined have made their mark with authoritative and accessible books that display keen insight into the fabric of history and the human dimension of conflict. The addition of Combined’s wide-ranging backlist and its impressive frontlist, and the addition of as distinguished an editor as Bob Pigeon to our staff, will bolster Da Capo’s existing strength in these fields. And the marketing and sales muscle of Da Capo and Perseus will bring the books to the widest possible readership.” Bob Pigeon commented: “The fit is ideal. Over the past two years, I have watched Da Capo grow by leaps and bounds in what it publishes and how it publishes. By joining forces with Da Capo and Perseus, Combined will build on its past successes and pursue new projects for the future with resources and clout that were previously beyond our reach.” Bob Pigeon established Combined in 1991. In 1996 the company adopted a major expansion strategy, with a burgeoning list of history and military history titles originating on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2000, Combined Publishing made two strategic acquisitions, Sarpedon and Savas, both imprints with enviable reputation for producing military history books of substance. Perseus Books is a subsidiary of Perseus Capital, which has interests in a number of media and technology ventures. The members of the Perseus Books Group include Basic Books, Counterpoint Press, Da Capo Press, Perseus Publishing, Public Affairs, and Westview Press. The acquisition of Combined’s publishing business by Perseus does not involve Combined’s book distribution business, which will continue under the name of Casemate Publishers and Book Distributors. Lists distributed by Casemate include Leo Cooper/Pen & Sword Books, Birlinn Publishers, Histoire & Collections, Ian Allan Publishers, RZM Imports, Editions Heimdal and Foundry Books. Casemate are based in Pennsylvania (e-mail: casemate@casematepublishing.com).
