A History of the Peninsular War, Volume IX: Modern Studies of the War in Spain and Portugal edited by Paddy Griffith has been awarded the second prize in the 1999 annual award of the Literary Committee of the International Napoleonic Society. In advising Greenhill about the award, the President of the INS, Ben Weider, wrote: "A number of distinguished works were carefully evaluated and this volume has met the rigorous criteria established by the Committee. The quality of the publication represents a significant contribution to Napoleonic Studies. Consequently, it is with considerable satisfaction that I congratulate you and your staff for their efforts to procure and publish quality manuscripts in Napoleonic history." The Committee was composed of Robert Holtman, David J. Markham, Jeanne Ojala, John Severn, and Donald D. Howard. The first prize went to Secret Service, British Agents in France 1792–1815 by Elizabeth Sparrow (Boydell & Brewer).
