"NUTS!"

by Mark Hannam

Brigadier-General Mcauliffe`s famous reply to the Germans at Bastogne, pretty much sums up the year so far.

Thankfully I`m fighting fit once again. Heather and I would like to thank everyone who has kindly given their best wishes and support. It has helped me through what has proved to be a very difficult time.

During one stay in a hospital bed I cobbled up some pretty convincing 'cheap & dirty' Late Roman / Early Dark Ages rules for pitching my Romans against Frankly (horrible pun) all comers - particularly those nasty Pictish fellows. They were designed taking into account that both my concentration and stamina have been at a low ebb.

I`ve also polished up a set of simplish 2mm / 6mm Divisional / Operational level Western Desert rules for 1940-42, which came to mind years ago. To denote unit frontages, models are placed within rubber bands in place of being stuck to bases. This allows units to change formation within a given ground area to suit the situation. Sounds weird but gentlemen, it works!

I`ve decided to do more skirmish gaming - a chance to get all those figures I like spread across the historical spectrum, without it costing an arm and a leg or going blind / mad painting hordes of figures.

I`m presently collecting 25mm US Cavalry & Injuns (Apaches), admittedly just an excuse to buy Snapdragon studios lovely adobe buildings.

The change in style is down to simplifying the production of The Gauntlet, both at home and for the lovely Donna down at the print shop. It will have settled down a bit by next issue. Please let me know what you think.

The notebook which held my generic AMBUSH system turned up recently after being lost for several months - so I`m afraid I`ll have to hold it over till next time. Hope you enjoy the rest.

The Forager column returns to it`s normal size and pithy self. U.S. Frontier individual skirmish rules - Generic Ambush rules - WW2 Rapid Fire scenario with a difference - Nechtansmere DBA Dark Ages scenario - Gunboats on the Danube (Great War roleplay part 2) - and more......

QUICK TIP

Discarded phonecards and those 8x5cm credit card size, loyalty cards issued by the likes of Somerfield / BP Premier Points make superb sturdy bases for wargames figures and they`re free.
