Guide To Reusing Broken Figures

by John Watson

I find it annoying to lose figures through breakages and I will do all I can to reuse those that have been damaged. I should mention that I generally use l5mm figures and so some of what follows may have to be treated with caution when using larger or smaller scales. The following are examples of what I have managed to achieve without having to commit old figures to the great melting pot in the sky or use a fancy and expensive hobby drill.

1) A medieval halberdier in the at ease position may lose the top part of the halberd above the holding hand. If this occurs, gently bend the lower half in the middle and in no time you have an archer at ease holding his bow at the top.

2) If a musketeer or arguebusier loses the end of the barrel add a bit of realism to your renaissance army by adding a little cotton wool to the end of what remains of the firearm. Paint it yellow, red and black and you have that very realistic but rather nasty and often fatal exploding firearm.

3) If your favorite knight or gendarme has a broken lance don't despair. After all if you watched Ivanhoe you would know that Lances frequently broke in combat. Just paint the broken end of the lance with a bare wood colour and there you have your battle hardened veteran.

4) Lastly artillery. If your rammer or layer has one of those action poses with the rammer/layer in the horizontal position and it has broken atthe hands, as they do, simply position the figure so that it appears that the rammer is deep down the cannon barrel. Couldn't be easier.

By the way if anyone knows what to do with a broken archer firing with either only the top half or the bottom half of the bow please let me know. I haven't worked this one out yet.
