Escape from the
Claws of Ra

Inspired by the Film: The Mummy

by Mark Hannam

I thought you might find this fun if you`ve seen THE MUMMY at the cinema recently. The game came about due to Heather`s passion for Ancients - Egyptians in particular, was inspired by Foundry`s 25mm Egyptian vignettes.

You are Woodyallenus a Canaanite warrior captured and brought to the palace of the great Pharaoh himself. It`s late at night and somehow you`ve managed to slip your bonds and overpower your guard. Once in the corridors of the palace you must find your way to freedom.

To keep the game fresh over several plays, number the room boxes (add your own) and draw a chit for the order they appear in. Roll once in The Coridors between each room. Use whatever skirmish or roleplay system you have to hand or use Daggers At Dumfries or my Heroes for Helen rules from issue No.10. Finally, why not treat Egyptian guards as "Goonsquads" (Cross of Iron).

The Corridors

1 - Somwhere to hide for a turn, - guards etc will run past.

2 - Serving girl - 1,2 you go unnoticed; 3,4 screams and runs away; 5 runs into next room; 6 She`s Canaanite too and hides you till guards go away.

3 - Servants - 1,2 you go unnoticed; 3,4 they run away; 5 run into next room; 6 1xAvD-1 unarmed servants try to stop you.

4,5 - Empty, no-one around

6 - Guards. 1xD6 Pharoahs Bodyguards. Armed with a mixture of swords and spears - no shields.

Die score 2 or more then :

    +1 if there have been screams
    +1 if people have run away

The Beating Room

You hear some screams. Looking through a grill in a door, you see a solitary jailor is taking his pleasure on unfortunates. Tackle Jailor, then roll 1xD6

1 - Jewish Merchant. A poor devil, you rescue him. 1,2 He makes so much noise he alerts the guards; 3,4 He shuffles along gratefully but will give away any hiding place on a 1,2,3; 5,6 ungrateful scum will give you away at first opportunity to redeem himself.

2,3,4, - Nile low-life. No help there. May divert the guards.

5 - Prisoners of Pharoahs conquests. 1xD6 warriors, chained. May follow you but they all speak different tongues.

6 - Cananite Prisoner. A fellow warrior to join in your escape.

The Armoury

Weapons galore, it`s time to tool up, but before you do so, there are two guards playfully fencing who must be taken care of.

1 - Rumbled ! They rush you, shouting for help. More guards appear in 1xD6 turns

2 - They attack with their improvised weapons.

3,4 - They run. They return with 1xAvD guards in 1xAvD turns.

5,6 - They`re taken by surprise and cower.

Pharaoh`s Pleasure

Pharaoh is being entertained by his concubines. Roll 1xD6 :
1,2 Pharaoh stands in defiance;
3,4 he cowers in submission (treat as Jewish Merchant);
5 He attacks you;
6 He uses the secret passage.

But what about the girls ?

1 - They run screaming in terror alerting the guards. 1xAvD guards will appear in 1xd6 turns.

2,3,4 - Huddle in corner whimpering.

5 - Some screams, some insults, a few throw objects to hand at you.

6 - 1xAvD-1 girls swarm at you and attack.

The Queen`s Infidelity

Behind the drapes the queen is taking pleasure from Catharses the High Priest.

1 - There are screams from both of them.

2,3 - Eunochs and or priests attack to potect their lord and lady.

4 - Stunned at being discovered, and aware at the danger they`re in from being found out, they bid you leave.

5 - Cartharses flees for his safety leaving the queen to your mercy. Looks like the unfulfilled royal totty is not uninterested - miss 1xAvD turns.

Roll again : 1 Satisfied, she calls the guards;

2,3, A raging Cartharses returns with 1xAvD Priests and Eunuchs!;

4,5,6, using the royal silks, you escape through the window to the streets below.

6 - Catharses (at sword point ?) ushers you to a secret passage and out onto the streets of Thebes beyond. If someone runs into an occupied room, assume the occupants are alerted and ready to defend themsleves on a positive morale roll.

The Streets of Thebes

You`ve made it outside the palace but you`re not in the clear yet ! Roll 1xD6. If you escape your pursuers, roll again.

1 - A chariot races after you through the narrow streets

2- Turning this way and that down a jumble of empty narrow streets, roll again.

3,4 - Nubian Police ! They chase and send their monkey after you (+1 in melee for teeth).

5 - Hide amongst the market stalls for a turn, which shakes off your pursuers.

6 - You`re ushered into a doorway by a mature man with a long white beard and a resemblance to Charlton Heston. Moses bid you welcome to his home. You`re safe.
